Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ Just Got a New Look, and It’s Setting the Bar High for September Horror

Horror fans have spent the past couple of years watching Zach Cregger transform from a comedy alum into one of the genre’s most exciting new voices, and his next project is shaping up to be his biggest swing yet. After delivering critically acclaimed original horror with ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Weapons,’ Cregger is now taking on one of gaming’s most beloved franchises with his own distinctive spin.

That project, a reimagining of ‘Resident Evil,’ has spent months building anticipation through a steady drip of marketing materials, and the promotional rollout shows no signs of slowing down as its release date approaches. Sony has continued releasing new posters and footage in the weeks leading up to the film’s theatrical debut, each one adding another layer of dread to the film’s atmosphere.

The latest addition to that campaign arrived with a fresh poster highlighting the film’s premium theatrical formats, showing a bloodied medical bag against a moody blue backdrop as a fleeing figure appears in the distance. The image confirms ‘Resident Evil’ will screen exclusively in theaters starting September 18, with premium formats including IMAX, ScreenX, and 4DX all getting their own dedicated poster variants.

Unlike previous adaptations tied directly to the games’ established storylines, Cregger’s version tells an entirely original story that exists alongside the events of ‘Resident Evil 2’ rather than retelling them. The film follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, who finds himself caught in a nonstop fight for survival as Raccoon City collapses into chaos around him over the course of one horrifying night.

Cregger has been direct about his creative approach heading into the project, explaining that his goal was to make a film that captured what it actually feels like to play through a ‘Resident Evil’ game rather than adapting a specific plot point by point. He said the movie takes place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2, in a trailer breakdown he gave to IGN, describing Bryan as just another person on a separate mission across town while the more familiar police station storyline unfolds elsewhere in the city.

That approach fits neatly into Cregger’s broader creative sensibility. Before shifting into horror, his early career included slapstick comedy work on projects like ‘Miss March’ and sketch group ‘The Whitest Kids U’Know,’ a background that stands in stark contrast to the grounded, unsettling style he’s since become known for.

Rounding out the cast alongside Abrams are Zach Cherry from ‘Severance,’ Kali Reis from ‘True Detective: Night Country,’ Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson from ‘Twisted Metal,’ giving the film a cast full of performers known for prestige television work rather than typical horror franchise casting. Cregger co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten, known for his work on the ‘John Wick’ franchise’s third and fourth chapters.

The film carries an R rating for strong bloody violence, gore, and language throughout, positioning it firmly in line with the tone fans have come to expect from Cregger’s previous genre work. With a reported runtime of roughly 94 minutes, the film looks to deliver a tight, relentless pace befitting its single-night survival premise.

‘Resident Evil’ is set to premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 17 before opening wide in theaters the following day. Given Cregger’s track record with both critics and audiences on his past two horror outings, expectations are running high that this franchise reinvention could become one of the fall season’s standout theatrical releases.
