‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Just Teased Trouble Brewing for Jamie’s Parents Ahead of Season 2

The ‘Outlander‘ universe has never let its central couples stay happy for long, and its prequel spinoff is proving to be no exception to that rule. ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ spent its debut season building two star-crossed romances from the ground up, only to leave both pairs scrambling toward uncertain futures by the time the credits rolled.

That uncertainty is only intensifying as the series heads into its sophomore run. Season one ended with Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie finally choosing each other over clan loyalty and family expectation, fleeing together despite belonging to rival factions, while Claire’s parents faced their own turbulent journey through wartime England and an unexpected leap through time.

Now, with Season 2 just around the corner, Entertainment Weekly has released an exclusive new clip showing that Brian and Ellen’s hard-won happiness is already under serious threat. The scene finds the pair facing real danger together, a signal that the show has no intention of letting its central romance settle into anything resembling peace.

That tension lines up with everything showrunner Matthew B. Roberts has previewed about the upcoming season. Roberts, who also served as showrunner on the original ‘Outlander’ series, has warned that the new episodes will be an emotionally demanding watch. “There are a lot of ups and a lot of downs. And some hard episodes to watch,” he told TV Insider during a set visit in Scotland, describing the season’s tonal shifts.

Much of that turbulence stems from the looming Jacobite Rising of 1715, a real historical conflict that will pull Brian away from Ellen and reshape much of the season’s central drama. Having already met the outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor in Season 1, viewers can expect the show to lean further into the political unrest defining this turbulent period of Scottish history.

Meanwhile, Claire’s parents face an entirely different kind of upheaval. According to the show’s official synopsis, the season opens by resolving one of Season 1’s biggest cliffhangers: whether Julia, Henry, and their newborn son William successfully traveled back through the standing stones of Craigh na Dun. Early details suggest only Henry makes it through, landing in an unfamiliar era and grappling with declining mental health as a World War I veteran confined to a psychiatric hospital.

That separation sets up what executive producer Maril Davis has described as the show’s larger structural ambition. “We are going to show not only one great love affair, but two great love affairs and how those parallel love stories intertwine and show us how we got to Jamie and Claire,” Davis told Entertainment Weekly ahead of the prequel’s launch, framing the series as a dual romance spanning two vastly different eras.

The returning cast includes Harriet Slater as Ellen MacKenzie, Jamie Roy as Brian Fraser, Hermione Corfield as Julia Moriston, and Jeremy Irvine as Henry Beauchamp, alongside Tony Curran, Séamus McLean Ross, Sam Retford, Rory Alexander, and Conor MacNeill rounding out the ensemble. The ten-episode season continues to draw from Diana Gabaldon’s novels, with the author serving as a consulting producer on the series.

With the flagship ‘Outlander’ series having already wrapped its own story, ‘Blood of My Blood’ is positioned to carry the franchise’s legacy forward by digging deeper into the family history that shaped Claire and Jamie’s own love story. Given how much turmoil is already brewing in this new footage, fans should brace for a season built on separation before any reunion feels earned.
