What Kevin Feige’s ‘Secret Wars’ Comic Book References Actually Reveal About the Movie

Adapting a decade-old comic run for the big screen is never simple, especially when that source material reshaped an entire fictional universe in ways only comics can. Marvel Studios has spent years hinting at how it might tackle ‘Secret Wars’, but Kevin Feige’s latest comments finally point toward exactly which version of the story is guiding the film.

That version is Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić’s acclaimed 2015 comic run, widely considered one of the most ambitious storylines in Marvel Comics history. Rather than simply borrowing the title, Feige has now confirmed the film is drawing directly from that specific narrative, giving fans a much clearer roadmap for what ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ might actually look like on screen.

Feige described the approach in vivid terms, comparing the film’s structure to a familiar image from the franchise’s own recent history. “Like Loki gathering up stray branches of the timeline at the end of all things, we’ll pick up the threads of Hickman and Ribić’s run and all those who came before and weave a new story inspired by the vast tapestry of our comics and films,” he said, framing the movie as a synthesis of decades of Marvel storytelling rather than a direct panel-for-panel adaptation.

That distinction matters enormously given just how strange and sprawling the original comic run actually was. Hickman and Ribić’s ‘Secret Wars’ depicted the total destruction of the Marvel multiverse, with the surviving fragments of countless alternate realities stitched together into a single patchwork planet called Battleworld, ruled over by a god-like Doctor Doom who had absorbed cosmic power once held by beings like the Beyonders.

Feige’s comments gestured toward some of that source material’s more surreal imagery without confirming exactly how much would carry over. He specifically referenced moments like Steve Rogers fighting from atop a dinosaur and banished heroes battling hordes of zombies, both iconic sequences from the comic’s various Battleworld domains, before apocalyptic fires ultimately reforge the entire universe by the story’s conclusion.

That kind of scale explains why Feige has been careful to frame the film as an interpretation rather than a strict translation. “All the stories of the past remain true, but now all things are possible. We hope to carry that inspiration forward into a new medium,” he said, suggesting the film will treat prior MCU storylines the same way Hickman’s comic treated decades of Marvel continuity: as building blocks for something new rather than contradictions to erase.

Central to that vision is Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, whom Feige has repeatedly emphasized as the story’s true centerpiece rather than a simple stand-in for previous MCU villains like Thanos. In the comics, Doom’s godlike control over Battleworld made him simultaneously a tyrant and a strange kind of savior, having personally prevented total nonexistence by cobbling together what remained of reality. Feige’s description of Doom as someone “noble and loyal” yet also willing to “use whatever means necessary” tracks closely with that morally complicated comic book portrayal.

Whether the film ultimately reconstructs Battleworld as a literal patchwork of alternate realities, or uses it more as a thematic backdrop for uniting Marvel’s expanding cast of heroes, remains unclear. But Feige’s direct namedrop of Hickman and Ribić signals that Marvel isn’t simply borrowing a title for marketing purposes, it’s genuinely mining one of the most celebrated comic runs in company history for its narrative DNA.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ still months from release and ‘Secret Wars’ not expected until December 2027, fans now have a much clearer lens for parsing every future trailer, set photo, and casting rumor tied to Marvel’s next great crossover event.
