Paul Walker Could Return as Brian in ‘Fast Forever’ — But There’s a Major Catch

The ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise has spent over two decades built around the idea of family, both the literal kind and the ride-or-die crew that’s defined the series since its earliest films. That theme has made the loss of Paul Walker feel especially personal to fans, and it’s a wound the franchise has approached carefully ever since his passing during production on ‘Furious 7’ back in 2013.

Walker’s death forced Universal to make an emotional decision at the time, relying on his younger brothers, Cody and Caleb, along with early digital techniques to complete his final scenes as Brian O’Conner. The character was given a fittingly gentle sendoff, driving off into the sunset alongside Dominic Toretto rather than being killed off, a choice widely praised for how it honored Walker’s legacy.

Now, as the franchise heads toward its planned conclusion with ‘Fast Forever,’ set for release on March 17, 2028, Vin Diesel has already teased that Brian O’Conner will factor into the story once again. That announcement has reignited speculation about exactly how the character might return to screen, especially since technology has advanced significantly since the workaround used back in 2015.

Cody Walker has now made clear he won’t be part of bringing his brother’s character back this time. “My stance is, it’s what Meadow wants to see done; it’s her father,” Cody told Entertainment Weekly, referencing Paul’s daughter, Meadow Walker, who previously appeared in ‘Fast X.’ “I would not be interested in doing that again. I love the way his character exited the franchise. They didn’t kill him off; they didn’t do something cheesy like that. It’s beautiful; [Brian] is off raising his kids.”

Rather than stepping in as a body double the way he did for ‘Furious 7,’ Cody pointed to artificial intelligence as the more likely path forward if the studio decides to move ahead with bringing Brian back on screen. “But if they want to do that, if Meadow would like to see that, they don’t need me or Caleb,” he explained. “AI was not a thing back in 2014, so they could do that. There’s years of footage that was never used from these other Fast films. They’re the best in the business; they can figure that out.”

That approach would mark a significant shift from how the franchise handled Walker’s final scenes over a decade ago, relying instead on unused archival footage combined with modern AI tools rather than a body double standing in for physical performance. It’s a method that’s grown increasingly common across Hollywood, though it hasn’t come without controversy given the ethical questions surrounding digitally recreating deceased performers.

Diesel first teased Brian’s potential return at a 2025 FuelFest car event, telling the crowd his conditions for the finale included bringing the franchise back to Los Angeles, returning to its street-racing roots, and reuniting Dom with Brian O’Conner in some capacity. Universal has since confirmed the film’s official title and release date, though details about exactly how Walker’s character will factor into the story remain unclear.

With the decision ultimately resting in Meadow Walker’s hands, fans are left waiting to see whether the franchise will attempt to bring Brian O’Conner back to the screen at all, and if so, how tastefully that return can be handled using AI-assisted technology and years of unused footage. Given how carefully the franchise treated Walker’s exit the first time around, expectations for getting this right will likely be just as high.

For a series that’s always centered its emotional core on family, how it chooses to honor Paul Walker’s legacy in this final chapter may end up mattering just as much as the film itself.
