‘Resident Evil’ Box Office Tracking Explodes Ahead of Global Debut

Zach Cregger has spent the last few years quietly building one of the most reliable brands in modern horror. Between the slow-burn dread of ‘Barbarian’ and the ensemble chaos of ‘Weapons,’ the filmmaker has developed a reputation for turning modest premises into genuine box office events.

That momentum is now colliding with one of gaming’s most recognizable horror franchises, and industry watchers are taking notice. With Cregger’s take on ‘Resident Evil’ just days away from hitting theaters, early buzz has shifted from cautious optimism to something closer to genuine excitement.

According to tracking data shared by industry analyst Global Box Office, ‘Resident Evil’ is now projected to debut somewhere between $120 million and $150 million globally in its opening weekend. Pre-sales have already kicked off in multiple countries, with premium formats like IMAX and other large-format screens reportedly performing especially well overseas.

That kind of international appetite marks a real shift for a franchise that has historically leaned hard on audiences outside North America to drive its box office totals. Domestic tracking alone has already pointed toward a record-setting opening for the series, with early projections hovering around a $35 million start before climbing as advance ticket sales came in stronger than expected.

Some outlets have floated even higher domestic figures, with estimates reaching into the $40 million to $50 million range. Either number would comfortably surpass the $26.7 million opening weekend that 2010’s ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ has held as the franchise’s domestic high mark for more than a decade.

Much of the confidence behind these numbers traces directly back to Cregger’s last outing. ‘Weapons’ opened to $43.5 million domestically before finishing its run with $151.5 million in North America and roughly $270 million worldwide, all against a modest production budget.

That kind of return has clearly reshaped how the industry views Cregger’s box office pull heading into a much bigger swing. ‘Resident Evil’ reportedly carries a production budget of around $80 million, meaning even the low end of current global projections would represent a substantial win for Sony.

The film follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, who gets pulled into a chaotic outbreak while attempting to make a delivery. Rather than adapting a specific game or centering on established franchise characters like Leon Kennedy or Jill Valentine, Cregger has built an original story designed to run parallel to the games’ established lore.

That approach has generated some friction with longtime fans, but Cregger has been focused on translating gameplay mechanics into the viewing experience itself. He explained that he wanted the film to capture the franchise’s resource management tension, noting that audiences will always know exactly how many bullets remain in Bryan’s gun, a detail he discussed in comments reported by PC Gamer.

If the higher end of that global projection holds, ‘Resident Evil’ would open above several recent genre hits. ‘Alien: Romulus’ debuted to roughly $108.2 million worldwide in 2024, while ‘Scream VI’ opened to around $67 million in 2023, making Cregger’s film a potential new benchmark for horror openings.

Sony has also ramped up its international marketing push in response to the overseas demand, sending Cregger and Abrams on a global press tour in the lead-up to release. The studio clearly sees an opportunity to turn a long-dormant franchise into a genuine worldwide tentpole rather than a niche domestic release.

‘Resident Evil’ arrives in theaters on September 18, landing the same weekend as Warner Bros.’ ‘Practical Magic 2’ in what’s shaping up to be a genuinely competitive late-summer frame. The film’s ability to hold onto that IMAX and premium-format momentum through opening day will likely determine whether it lands closer to the low or high end of its current projection.
