Thomas Jane’s New Gym Photo Has Fans Convinced He’s Returning as the Punisher in Highly Awaited MCU Project
Marvel’s multiverse era has trained fans to read a lot into a little, and 2027’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ has become the ultimate proving ground for that instinct. With Kevin Feige himself teasing that the film will bring together characters from across Marvel’s entire cinematic history, every cryptic social media post from a former cast member now gets treated like a potential clue.
That speculation machine kicked into high gear this week around one particular name from Marvel’s past. Thomas Jane, who played Frank Castle in 2004’s ‘The Punisher,’ shared a new photo of himself that immediately sent fans into a frenzy of theorizing about a possible multiversal return.
The image, posted to Jane’s own account, shows the actor in the middle of an intense gym session, prompting fans to draw an instant connection between the photo and a potential appearance as the Punisher in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ The timing, coming amid ongoing rumors about legacy actors returning for Marvel’s next big crossover event, was enough to set social media ablaze with theories.
This isn’t the first time Jane’s gym sessions have sparked this exact kind of speculation. He’s been photographed training alongside current MCU Punisher actor Jon Bernthal on multiple occasions over the past few years, with those sessions tied at the time to Bernthal’s own preparation for projects like ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ rather than any confirmed appearance from Jane himself.
Jane’s own public comments about returning to the role have been famously inconsistent over the years. Back in 2021, he suggested he’d only come back as Frank Castle if fans truly wanted it and the right script came together, leaving the door open without making any real commitment.
More recently, though, Jane appeared to close that door rather firmly. In an interview promoting his film ‘Frontier Crucible,’ he was directly asked about the possibility of reprising the role for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Secret Wars’ through Marvel’s multiverse mechanics, the same trick that’s already brought back actors like Wesley Snipes and Chris Evans for cameo appearances.
Rather than expressing excitement at the prospect, Jane reflected on feeling miscast in the original film, pointing to Frank Castle’s Italian heritage as something he never quite embodied despite dyeing his hair and altering his look for the part. He spoke warmly about Bernthal’s take on the character instead, suggesting he felt the role had finally found its right fit years after his own turn in the part.

That context makes the fan reaction to Jane’s new photo something of a mixed bag. On one hand, his willingness to keep training alongside Bernthal shows he hasn’t fully distanced himself from the Punisher legacy, even years after stepping away from the character. On the other, his own comments suggest he isn’t necessarily lobbying for a comeback the way some other legacy actors have.
Marvel Studios has stayed characteristically quiet on any specific casting for ‘Secret Wars,’ leaving fans to parse gym photos and old interviews for clues rather than working from anything official. Given how unpredictable the multiverse concept has already proven with past surprise cameos, it’s easy to see why even a routine workout photo gets treated as a potential Easter egg.
Whether Jane’s latest photo means anything more than a guy staying in shape remains entirely unclear, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from running wild. With ‘Secret Wars’ still more than a year away, fans clearly aren’t planning on slowing down their detective work anytime soon.
Do you think Thomas Jane could return as the Punisher in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’?
