Tom Holland’s web-slinger has had a summer for the record books, and moviegoers still aren’t done showing up. Since bowing on July 31, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has turned what was supposed to be a strong opening into a genuine cultural moment, with audiences returning again and again well past its debut weekend.

The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film, starring Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, opened to a record-breaking $360 million domestically, besting Avengers: Endgame’s previous mark to become the biggest domestic box office opening of all time. It also delivered the second-largest global debut ever, and it hasn’t slowed down much since.

According to box office tracker Luiz Fernando, who posts under the handle @Luiz_Fernando_J, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ grossed a strong $2 million on its seventh Friday in release, a modest 47.9% drop from the previous Friday despite losing 217 theaters overnight. That kind of holdover strength, per the post, has the film sitting at a $928.8 million domestic cume, putting it 108 million dollars ahead of where ‘Avengers: Endgame’ stood at the same point in its run, even though it started only 3 million dollars ahead of Endgame’s pace.

That trajectory has set up a genuine shot at history. The post projects ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ could overtake ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ as the highest-grossing film of all time domestically as soon as this Sunday, with Tuesday floated as the fallback date if the weekend doesn’t quite get there. The film is reportedly eyeing an $8 million to $10 million three-day weekend in its seventh frame, numbers that would be remarkable for a movie two months into release.

The film’s staying power isn’t a surprise given how it launched. It earned an A CinemaScore from opening-weekend audiences, and reviews leaned positive out of the gate, with a healthy critical reception matched by an even stronger audience response on Rotten Tomatoes.

The numbers behind the run are staggering on their own. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ climbed to No. 2 on the all-time domestic chart with $858.4 million, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’s $858.3 million, with only ‘Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens’ still ahead at $936.6 million domestically. Globally, the film became the eighth movie in history to cross $2 billion, hitting that mark after just three weekends of release.

Along the way, the film racked up a string of individual milestones, including the fastest run to $400 million domestically at just four days and the second-fastest climb to $1 billion worldwide behind only ‘Avengers: Endgame’. It also set single-day records, with the highest-grossing Monday in box office history at $47 million, topping ‘Black Panther’s previous mark, and the biggest Tuesday ever with $42 million, surpassing ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.

Part of the film’s appeal lies in its story, which follows Holland’s Peter Parker navigating an isolated new chapter of his life before a mysterious, unseen threat begins closing in. The ensemble adds fresh blood to the mix, with Sadie Sink’s telepathic, secretive newcomer and Jon Bernthal’s morally murky take on Frank Castle drawing particular praise for reshaping the tone of the franchise.

Whether the record falls this weekend or slips to Tuesday, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already rewritten what a modern blockbuster run looks like. With ‘The Force Awakens’ finally within striking distance, Sony and Marvel are on the verge of a milestone that has stood untouched for nearly a decade, and fans tracking the numbers in real time are clearly here for every update.
