‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Become America’s Highest-Grossing Movie Ever

Sony and Marvel have spent the last six weeks watching ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ rewrite the domestic box office record book almost weekly, and the superhero sequel still isn’t done. What started as a strong summer opening has snowballed into one of the most dominant theatrical runs in modern movie history.

The Tom Holland-led sequel opened to $360.1 million domestically over its first weekend, a number that instantly topped ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the biggest domestic opening ever. From there, the film kept climbing, crossing $2 billion worldwide just 17 days into release and becoming the eighth title in history to hit that global benchmark.

Now the film is on the verge of its biggest milestone yet. Heading into this weekend, ‘Brand New Day’ sits at roughly $924.9 million domestically, needing only about $12.7 million more to pass ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and its $936.6 million total as the highest-grossing movie of all time at the North American box office.

‘The Force Awakens’ has held that domestic crown since its 2015 release, a run that has outlasted every would-be challenger for over a decade. ‘Brand New Day’ has already blown past that film’s pace on nearly every other benchmark along the way, becoming the fastest movie ever to reach $700 million, $800 million, and $900 million domestically.

The film hit the $900 million mark in just 36 days, compared to the 50 days it took ‘The Force Awakens’ to get there. With a sixth consecutive weekend atop the box office already locked in and industry trackers now projecting a final domestic total somewhere between $950 million and $960 million, the record isn’t just within reach, it’s essentially treated as inevitable at this point.

Part of what has kept ‘Brand New Day’ performing like a fresh release well into its second month in theaters is its reception. The film currently holds a certified fresh 90 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, paired with an even stronger 98 percent audience score, a combination that has helped sustain word of mouth long after its record-setting opening weekend.

Individual theater chains have felt the impact directly. Cinemark confirmed the film became the highest-grossing domestic release in the chain’s history in less than three weeks, with the company’s Justin McDaniel calling the milestone an extraordinary achievement tied to the enduring pull of the Spider-Man character across generations of moviegoers.

Beyond its domestic chase, ‘Brand New Day’ has already become Sony’s highest-grossing release of all time both domestically and internationally, and has climbed into the top 10 highest-grossing films ever released worldwide with a total north of $2.33 billion. Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s film stars Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, and its box office success has helped push the 2026 domestic box office past the $7 billion mark for the year, running more than 20 percent ahead of where 2025 stood at the same point.

Whether the film crosses that final threshold this weekend or takes a few more days to get there, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is on track to leave the box office record books looking very different than they did before its release.
