‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Cement Itself as the Third Highest-Grossing Movie of All Time
Some box office runs fade quickly after their opening weekend buzz wears off. Others keep climbing, week after week, until the numbers stop feeling real and start feeling historic.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has firmly settled into the second category. Since launching in theaters at the end of July, Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker has spent its entire run rewriting box office records, and its theatrical journey is now approaching its final chapter.
According to new projections, the film is expected to close out its theatrical run with a global total somewhere between $2.5 billion and $2.6 billion, a figure that would place it as the third highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, not adjusted for inflation. Only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ currently sit above that mark on the all-time chart.
That kind of staying power has been the defining story of the film’s release. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and also starring Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal, ‘Brand New Day’ opened with a record-breaking $360 million domestic weekend before going on to post the biggest global opening in Sony’s history and the second-fastest climb to $1 billion worldwide in franchise history.
The film’s momentum hasn’t just been about speed. It became the eighth movie ever to cross $2 billion globally, doing so in just 17 days, and has spent every week since August as the top-grossing release in theaters, aside from one day it briefly lost the crown to a new horror release. Domestically, it currently sits in second place on the all-time chart, trailing ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ by a shrinking margin that many box office analysts expect it to close within weeks.
Passing ‘The Force Awakens’ domestically would make ‘Brand New Day’ the highest-grossing film ever released in North America, a milestone that once felt reserved for franchises with decades of cultural dominance behind them. Globally, though, catching ‘Avatar’s’ nearly $3 billion total appears far less likely, leaving the film’s ceiling at third place worldwide barring an unexpected extension of its theatrical life.

Even without reaching the very top, joining ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ as only the third film ever to cross the $2.5 billion threshold places ‘Brand New Day’ in genuinely rare company. It’s a level of box office dominance that few franchises reach even once, let alone in a fourth installment featuring the same lead actor.

For Sony and Marvel, the film’s performance represents a career-defining moment not just for the franchise, but for Holland himself, who has now led two billion-dollar Spider-Man releases in the span of five years. It also reinforces just how much audience appetite remains for theatrical blockbusters when a film manages to capture genuine cultural momentum rather than relying on franchise fatigue-proof branding alone.
As ‘Brand New Day’ winds down its theatrical run in the coming weeks, all eyes will be on whether it can officially dethrone ‘The Force Awakens’ domestically before exiting theaters entirely. Either way, its final tally is set to become one of the defining box office stories of the decade, a reminder that even in an era of shrinking theatrical windows, the right film can still turn moviegoing into an event.
Do you think Spider-Man: Brand New Day will become the third highest-grossing movie of all time?
