‘Crystal Lake’ Gives First Look at Young Jason Voorhees Ahead of October Premiere

The ‘Friday the 13th‘ franchise spent years trapped in legal limbo, with rights disputes keeping Jason Voorhees essentially frozen at the bottom of Crystal Lake since 2009’s Platinum Dunes remake. That drought is finally coming to an end, and the character’s return is starting with something fans have never seen before: Jason as a child.

That return comes courtesy of ‘Crystal Lake,’ an eight-episode prequel series from A24 and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane arriving on Peacock this October. Rather than jumping straight into slasher territory, the show digs into the origins of Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, following her in the aftermath of her son’s tragic drowning at the campground that would later become notorious.

New character posters have now given fans their very first look at young Jason himself, played by Callum Vinson, best known for his role in the ‘Chucky’ television series. The images mark the first time audiences have seen a live-action portrayal of Jason as a child rather than the hulking, hockey-mask-wearing killer he eventually becomes, offering a genuinely different entry point into the character’s mythology.

Set nearly a year after Jason’s drowning, the series follows Pamela as she struggles to move past her grief, only for two strangers to arrive at her door digging into her past, setting off a disturbing chain of events that leaves the town of Crystal Lake questioning exactly who she really is. It’s a slow-burn character study rather than a straightforward body-count slasher, at least based on how the show has been described so far.

Kane has been candid about how deliberately the show avoids simply replicating the formula fans expect from the franchise. He explained that the biggest conceptual challenge was working around audience assumptions about what a ‘Friday the 13th’ story should look like, noting that they weren’t making a Friday the 13th movie at all, but rather a story about the town itself and a prequel centered on Jason’s mother.

That distinction gave the creative team room to build the show however they wanted, according to Kane, while still honoring ownership over the broader franchise’s legacy. The series notably shifts its setting to the 1970s, a departure from the late-1950s timeframe previously established for Jason’s death in the original film series.

The full cast includes William Catlett as Levon Brooks, Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks, Cameron Scoggins as Dorf, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace, alongside Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik rounding out the ensemble. Michael Lennox directs several episodes, with additional installments helmed by Celine Held and Logan George, and story credits split among Kane, Bryan Fuller, Jennifer Silverman, Pia Wilson, Evan Endicott, and Josh Stoddard.

All eight episodes of ‘Crystal Lake’ premiere together on Peacock on October 15, giving fans a full binge-ready release just in time for the Halloween season. With Jason’s return to live-action finally underway after so many years of uncertainty, and reports suggesting a new feature film may also be in early development, this prequel series looks like just the beginning of a much bigger revival for the franchise.

Vinson’s casting also fits a broader pattern in his still-young career of landing high-profile genre roles. Beyond ‘Chucky’ and now ‘Crystal Lake,’ he’s set to appear in season three of ‘The Night Agent’ and has been cast as Atreus in Amazon Prime Video’s live-action ‘God of War’ adaptation, giving him a growing résumé across some of streaming’s biggest genre properties.

For longtime fans of the franchise, seeing Jason portrayed as a vulnerable child rather than an unstoppable killing machine offers a genuinely fresh angle on a character whose backstory has mostly been told through brief flashbacks and exposition in past films. Whether that approach pays off creatively will become clear once the series actually premieres, but the marketing rollout so far suggests Peacock and A24 are confident in the direction they’ve taken.
