‘Slow Horses’ Just Scored a Season 8 Renewal Before Season 6 Even Premieres

Spy dramas rarely manage to stay consistently great across multiple seasons, but Apple TV’s darkly comic take on the genre has quietly become the exception. Built around a team of disgraced British intelligence agents nobody wants, the show has turned career failure into one of streaming’s most reliable success stories.

That success just earned another vote of confidence from Apple, arriving at a particularly well-timed moment for the franchise. With Season 6 still days away from its debut, the streamer has already locked in plans for the series to continue well beyond its next several chapters.

‘Slow Horses‘ has officially been renewed for Season 8 at Apple TV, with the announcement landing shortly after the show’s Emmy win for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series. The new season will consist of six episodes and will adapt ‘Clown Town,’ the ninth novel in Mick Herron’s Slough House book series, continuing the show’s track record of translating Herron’s espionage fiction almost directly to screen.

Gary Oldman will once again return as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but famously unkempt leader of Slough House, the MI5 department where career-ending mistakes send disgraced agents to serve out their professional purgatory. His performance has anchored the series since its 2022 debut, and shows no signs of slowing down as the show heads deeper into Herron’s expanding catalog of source material.

This isn’t the first time Apple has moved quickly to secure the show’s future. Season 7 was confirmed last year, well before Season 6 had even premiered, continuing a pattern where the streamer has consistently greenlit new seasons before the current one finishes airing. Season 7 will adapt Herron’s eighth novel, ‘Bad Actors,’ marking a return to the show’s usual one-book-per-season structure after Season 6 combined two separate novels into a single run.

Season 6 itself is set to premiere Wednesday, adapting both ‘Joe Country’ and ‘Slough House’ into six episodes releasing weekly through October. That expanded scope reflects just how much confidence Apple has placed in the franchise, even as it experiments with folding multiple books into shorter seasons to keep pace with the show’s annual release rhythm.

Executive producer Will Smith has previously suggested the show could keep running indefinitely, so long as both its star and its source material hold out. He told TV Insider that Oldman has expressed a desire to play Lamb “forever,” and that with Herron still actively writing new entries in the Slough House series, there’s little reason the show couldn’t continue well past its currently confirmed seasons.

That trajectory has been backed up by consistently strong reviews throughout the show’s run, including a rare perfect Rotten Tomatoes score for Season 2, along with a growing pile of Emmy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA recognition. With Herron’s ninth novel now locked in as Season 8’s foundation and no clear end in sight for the book series itself, ‘Slow Horses’ looks increasingly likely to remain one of Apple TV’s most dependable originals for years to come.
