Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Just Hit a Box Office Streak No R-Rated Movie Has Ever Touched
Most blockbusters follow a predictable pattern at the box office: a huge opening weekend followed by a steep decline once the initial rush of moviegoers has come and gone. Christopher Nolan’s latest epic has spent the better part of two months proving that pattern doesn’t have to apply to every film, especially when the director’s name carries the kind of trust Nolan has built with audiences over decades.
‘The Odyssey‘ opened on July 17 with a massive $123.5 million domestic debut, quickly establishing itself as one of the biggest films of the year despite its nearly three-hour runtime and R rating. The Matt Damon-led adaptation of Homer’s epic poem leaned heavily on IMAX support from the start, becoming only the second film in IMAX history to cross $100 million in that format within just 10 days, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
That momentum has refused to fade even now, nearly two months into its theatrical run. On its most recent Monday, ‘The Odyssey’ grossed $1.03 million from 1,983 locations, extending its remarkable streak of consecutive $1 million-plus days to 60 and pushing its total domestic gross to $601.73 million.
That streak now stands as the longest ever recorded for an R-rated film, having already passed the previous record of 55 consecutive days set by ‘Obsession’ earlier this year. For a movie built around a demanding subject and an adult audience, sustaining that kind of daily consistency for two full months is a genuinely rare feat in the current theatrical landscape.
Universal has leaned into that narrative throughout the film’s run, with Jim Orr, the studio’s President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, crediting Nolan’s reputation for the film’s staying power. Orr told Deadline that “The Odyssey is him operating at the peak of his powers,” a line that captures how thoroughly the film has outperformed typical expectations for a lengthy, R-rated historical epic.

That trust has translated into real numbers across the board. ‘The Odyssey’ became Nolan’s highest-grossing film of all time worldwide back in August, surpassing 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ and it currently stands as the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie ever behind only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ both domestically and globally. With Nolan’s filmography collectively pushing past $7 billion worldwide, ‘The Odyssey’ has cemented itself as a defining entry in that catalog.
Projections had previously placed the film’s likely final domestic total somewhere between $615 million and $630 million, though its continued daily consistency suggests that range could climb even higher before its theatrical run finally winds down. Whatever the final number ends up being, ‘The Odyssey’ has already secured its place as one of the most durable box office runs of the year, R-rated or otherwise.
