‘The Odyssey’ Just Wrapped Its Overseas Box Office Run With a Stunning Final Number

International box office performance has always been the trickiest variable for even Hollywood’s biggest directors, and China in particular has a reputation for humbling filmmakers who otherwise dominate everywhere else. That unpredictability made one director’s latest release in the territory worth watching especially closely this year.

Christopher Nolan has spent much of his career chasing consistent success in China, with mixed results across several of his previous films. His latest epic arrived in the country carrying real expectations, backed by a massive theatrical rollout and months of anticipation building since its original global release back in July.

‘The Odyssey‘ has now officially concluded its China box office run with a final total of $112 million, exceeding the film’s initial $104 million projection for the territory. The Matt Damon-led adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem launched in China on August 14, nearly a month after its worldwide debut, rolling out across more than twenty thousand screens including nearly eight hundred IMAX locations, covering roughly ninety percent of the country’s entire IMAX footprint.

The film’s China opening alone signaled just how strong its run would ultimately become. ‘The Odyssey’ pulled in $36.3 million over its three-day opening weekend, beating out ‘Tenet’s’ previous $29.8 million debut to become Nolan’s biggest three-day opening ever in the country, ranking as the second-biggest Hollywood opening weekend in China for all of 2026.

That momentum carried the film to the $100 million mark in just twenty-seven days, a milestone that carried genuine significance within Nolan’s personal box office history in the region. The achievement pushed ‘The Odyssey’ past the China totals of ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Tenet,’ and ‘Inception,’ leaving it trailing only ‘Interstellar’s’ $122 million lifetime China gross among all of Nolan’s films to date.

Crossing that threshold also made ‘The Odyssey’ the first Hollywood film that’s neither a sequel nor part of an established franchise to reach $100 million in China since the pandemic reshaped the country’s theatrical landscape. It became only the twelfth Hollywood film of any kind to hit that number in the post-COVID era, a notable feat for a three-hour, adult-skewing drama built around a three-thousand-year-old poem rather than existing intellectual property.

Nolan shot the entire production on 70mm IMAX film across multiple countries, a technical commitment that clearly resonated with Chinese audiences given how heavily IMAX screens contributed to the film’s overall performance there. The final $112 million tally caps off a run that outperformed even the studio’s own early expectations for the market.

China’s contribution adds another chapter to what’s already become one of Nolan’s most successful releases ever on a global scale. ‘The Odyssey’ crossed the billion-dollar mark worldwide within just three weeks of its original release, ultimately becoming Nolan’s highest-grossing film of his career, surpassing both ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ in the process.

With the film’s worldwide total continuing to climb across other major markets, China’s finished run stands as one of the more surprising success stories in a year already packed with box office milestones.
