Few casting decisions in recent memory have generated as much sustained debate as Paapa Essiedu’s selection to play Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter‘ series. Ever since the British actor’s casting was first reported, fans have split into camps over everything from faithfulness to the books’ physical descriptions to broader questions about diversity in legacy franchises.

That debate reignited this week after a quote attributed to author J.K. Rowling began circulating widely on social media, allegedly praising Essiedu’s early performance and predicting he’d win over skeptical fans. The quote spread quickly, drawing reactions from both supporters and critics of the casting before users started flagging something important.

The quote is fake. Rowling never said that Essiedu was “brilliant” in his early scenes or that he’d “win people over straight away,” and the fabricated statement has since been debunked as it made the rounds across social platforms, reigniting an already heated conversation about the casting with inaccurate information at its center.

Rowling’s real public comments on the matter have been far more measured than the viral fake quote suggested. Back in May 2025, after speculation mounted online about whether she might push to have Essiedu removed from the role due to his support for trans rights, Rowling addressed the situation directly on X. “I don’t have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn’t exercise it if I did,” she wrote. “I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.”

That statement came after Essiedu signed an open letter alongside more than 400 others, including fellow ‘Harry Potter’ alumni Eddie Redmayne and Katie Leung, calling on the UK entertainment industry to protect the trans community following a UK Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of sex. Rowling has largely stayed quiet on the specific casting controversy itself since then, even while addressing the surrounding political debate.

Beyond the fake quote controversy, Essiedu has spoken candidly about the genuine toll the casting backlash has taken on him personally. He told The Sunday Times of London that he’s received direct threats over the role, saying, “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you.'” He continued, “It really matters. The reality is that if I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.’ So while I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be murdered… That could age badly!”

Essiedu has also described the reactions to his casting as “extreme” in more recent interviews, acknowledging that the intensity of the response has affected him emotionally even as he’s tried to stay focused on the work itself. Despite the controversy, he’s remained committed to the role, having reportedly signed a 10-year contract tied to the ambitious, book-by-book structure HBO has planned for the series.

Essiedu joins an ensemble that includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout as the young trio of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. HBO has positioned the series as a faithful, decade-spanning adaptation of Rowling’s original book series, with each season expected to tackle a different installment of the franchise.

The series is currently set to premiere on December 25, and recent promotional footage has reportedly started winning over some of the audience that was initially skeptical of the casting choices, even as debate over Snape’s book-accurate appearance continues to divide fans online.

Misinformation like the fabricated Rowling quote tends to spread fastest in moments of genuine tension, and this controversy has had no shortage of that over the past year and a half. Whether or not Essiedu ultimately wins over the doubters once the series actually premieres, it’s worth separating the real story, one involving genuine threats, a real statement from Rowling, and a still-unfinished performance, from quotes invented purely to fuel the fire.
