‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Is Tracking to Smash a Box Office Record That’s Stood for 14 Years

Marvel has never been shy about bringing fans back into theaters for one more look at its biggest hits, but the rollout for Avengers: Endgame’s latest theatrical return has been anything but ordinary. What began as a modest plan to whet appetites ahead of Avengers: Doomsday has quietly turned into one of the most closely watched re-release campaigns in recent memory.

That momentum started building the moment tickets went on sale back in August, when the film shattered the century’s biggest first-day pre-sales record for any theatrical re-release within just a few hours, surpassing a mark previously held by Titanic’s 2012 3D re-release for fourteen years. The presale numbers alone signaled that Endgame Encore wasn’t just riding nostalgia, it was generating genuine box office heat.

Now, with the re-release just days away from its September 25 debut, industry tracking suggests Endgame Encore could pull off an even bigger feat: officially claiming the title of the biggest opening weekend of all time for a theatrical re-release. Current projections have the film pacing for a domestic haul between $22 million and $27 million through Sunday, positioning it to potentially edge past Titanic 3D’s $25.6 million opening weekend, a number that has stood as the modern re-release benchmark for over a decade.

Unlike a standard theatrical revival, Endgame Encore isn’t simply the same 2019 cut being dusted off for nostalgic moviegoers. The new version arrives with a custom introduction, altered color grading, adjusted dialogue, and, most importantly, brand-new footage designed to directly connect the story to December’s Avengers: Doomsday.

That connective tissue appears to be a major driver of the film’s box office momentum. Director Joe Russo told Fandango that Endgame Encore is required viewing for following the story in Doomsday, underscoring that this isn’t just a victory lap for a seven-year-old blockbuster but an active piece of setup for the next chapter of the franchise.

The re-release is also being positioned as one of the flagship titles for Disney’s new Infinity Vision program, a premium large-format certification designed to guarantee moviegoers a consistent, high-end theatrical experience across participating cinemas worldwide. Pairing that marketing push with genuine narrative stakes for Doomsday has given Endgame Encore a selling point most re-releases simply don’t have.

It’s worth noting that the domestic record for any theatrical re-release overall still belongs to a much older release: the 1997 Special Edition of the original ‘Star Wars,’ which pulled in roughly $138 million total during its run. Titanic 3D’s opening weekend record, by contrast, reflects the modern, big-format re-release era that Endgame Encore is now positioned to challenge directly.

Beating that Titanic 3D benchmark wouldn’t just be a symbolic win, either. It would mark the second time Endgame has toppled a Titanic-held box office record, following its now-famous 2019 milestone of surpassing Titanic’s worldwide gross just two weekends into its original theatrical run, a moment James Cameron himself publicly acknowledged at the time.

There’s also a bigger prize potentially in play. Endgame currently sits as the second-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, trailing Avatar by a shrinking margin. A strong opening weekend for Encore, combined with whatever additional international grosses the re-release pulls in, could put that all-time global record back within reach for a seven-year-old film few expected to still be making box office history.

With Avengers: Doomsday arriving in theaters this December, Endgame Encore’s opening weekend performance will offer an early signal of just how much appetite remains for the Multiverse Saga’s next chapter. If the current tracking holds, Marvel may be about to prove that even a movie audiences have already seen can still pack theaters better than almost anything else in the current marketplace.
