‘East of Eden’ New Look Reveals Florence Pugh’s Steinbeck Adaptation Ahead of October Premiere

Cathy’s life becomes intertwined with generations of the Trask family, particularly Abbott’s Adam Trask and Faist’s Charles Trask, as the characters navigate the darker side of the California dream across the farmlands of the Salinas Valley. The story follows two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, whose generations helplessly echo the biblical stories of Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel across decades of shifting fortune and conflict.
Kazan spoke about the challenge of casting Adam Trask specifically, explaining that she needed an actor capable of embodying physical masculinity while still carrying a genuine softness underneath. She recalled that Abbott’s own reaction to the casting process, joking that she must have actually meant Charles rather than Adam, revealed exactly the kind of nuanced understanding she was looking for, sentiments she shared in comments reported by AOL.
That same deliberate approach extended to casting Cathy and Adam’s twin sons, Cal and Aron, played by Joseph Zada and Joe Anders. Beyond Pugh, Abbott, and Faist, the ensemble includes Hoon Lee as Lee, Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, and Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton. That directorial split gives the adaptation two distinct creative perspectives across its runtime, while Kazan and co-showrunner Jeb Stuart maintain overall creative continuity across the entire season.
Filming took place in New Zealand, standing in for the Salinas Valley setting central to Steinbeck’s original novel. Given how much attention Pugh’s performance as Cathy Ames has already generated ahead of release, with early buzz suggesting the role could become a genuine awards-season contender, the series appears positioned to make a significant splash upon its October debut.
