‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Just Blew Past Nearly Every Recent Blockbuster’s Overseas Presales

China’s theatrical market has become one of the trickiest arenas for Hollywood releases to crack in recent years, with screening allocations often serving as an early signal of how much confidence local distributors have in a given title. Marvel’s latest re-release found itself in an unusually cautious starting position, at least at first.

‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ spent its first two weeks restricted to fewer than 100 screenings in China, a surprisingly modest allotment for a franchise with the kind of box office pedigree Marvel has built up in the country. That limited rollout made its eventual expansion look all the more dramatic once it finally arrived.

Pre-sales for ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore‘ expanded to 11,000 screenings this Friday ahead of the film’s September 25 re-release in China, with previews beginning September 24. The rerelease has already racked up a $342,000 pre-sales cume for the full September 24-27 window, putting it well ahead of most recent blockbuster comparisons in the market.

The $342,000 total splits across four distinct days, with $126,000 coming from Thursday, September 24 previews and $195,000 from the Friday, September 25 rerelease opening day alone. The remaining two days show a sharper drop-off, with $14,000 on Saturday, September 26 and $7,500 on Sunday, September 27.

That steep decline after opening day likely reflects how presale tracking naturally front-loads around a release’s earliest available showtimes, rather than signaling a genuine falloff in interest. With screenings still being added incrementally, later weekend numbers have simply had less time to accumulate before the snapshot was taken.

The comparisons make ‘Endgame Encore’s’ presale performance look particularly strong against the wider 2026 release slate. It’s already outpacing ‘Superman’ at $22,000, ‘F1’ at $36,000, ‘Dune: Part Two’ at $87,000, and the latest ‘Apes’ entry at $91,000 in China presales.

Further down the list, ‘Aquaman 2’ sits at $97,000, ‘The Flash’ at $125,000, and ‘Godzilla x Kong’ at $142,000, all trailing well behind Marvel’s rerelease. Even ‘The Batman’ at $175,000 and ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ at $221,000 fall short, leaving only ‘Captain America: Brave New World’s’ $346,000 presale kick-off still ahead, and even that comparison comes with 6 days still remaining before that film’s own presale window closes.

The initial cap of fewer than 100 screenings across the rerelease’s first two weeks stands out given how quickly momentum built once that ceiling lifted. Expanding to 11,000 screenings in a single jump suggests distributors saw enough demand signal to justify a considerably wider release than the film initially received.

That kind of restricted-then-expanded rollout isn’t unheard of in the Chinese market, where theatrical allocations can shift quickly based on early audience response. With additional screenings still expected to come online in the days ahead, the pacing of these presale figures could continue climbing well beyond their current totals.

This rerelease isn’t simply a nostalgia play. The version hitting Chinese theaters reportedly comes packaged with new footage tied to ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ positioning ‘Endgame Encore’ as much as a promotional bridge to the upcoming sequel as a standalone theatrical event.

That framing helps explain why Marvel and its distribution partners might have pushed hard for expanded screening access once early demand became clear. With ‘Doomsday’ still months away, giving ‘Endgame’ a fresh theatrical life doubles as an extended trailer campaign for one of the studio’s most anticipated upcoming releases.

With screenings still being added and the presale window not yet closed, these figures represent a snapshot rather than a final tally. If the current pacing holds, or accelerates as more theaters come online, ‘Endgame Encore’ could end up posting numbers that rival some of the biggest theatrical comebacks China has seen from a legacy blockbuster.

That kind of result would carry weight beyond just box office bragging rights. A strong turnout for a rerelease tied so directly to ‘Doomsday’ marketing would give Marvel a clear read on just how much appetite remains for the franchise’s next chapter before it even hits theaters in December.

Would you go back to theaters to see Avengers: Endgame again?
