‘Harry Potter’ Star Emma Watson Stuns at the Star-Studded Opening of George Lucas’s New Museum of Narrative Art

Hollywood doesn’t often gather in one place quite like it did this past weekend, when some of the industry’s biggest names descended on Los Angeles for a night that felt less like a typical red carpet and more like a full-blown cultural moment. The occasion marked the culmination of years of anticipation, bringing together filmmakers, actors, and cultural icons under one roof for the first time.

That anticipation centered on the long-awaited debut of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the $1,000,000,000 passion project founded by ‘Star Wars’ creator George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson. After more than seven years of construction in the city’s Exposition Park neighborhood, the museum finally opened its doors with an opening night gala on September 19, ahead of its public debut.

Among the sea of A-listers who turned out for the event, Emma Watson quickly became one of the standout looks of the night. The actress arrived in a bespoke black velvet minidress covered in real, live flowers, a design that leaned into her longstanding reputation for championing sustainable fashion on the red carpet.

Watson’s dress, styled by Jared Ellner, featured an off-the-shoulder neckline and short hem, with dense three-dimensional florals from local florist Anthony Maslo tracing the edges of the garment. White orchids mixed with sprigs of baby’s breath and small pale-yellow and pink blooms created a dramatic border, while the body of the dress stayed clean and understated beneath the floral treatment.

Watson wasn’t alone in bringing star power to the evening, with a guest list that read like a highlight reel of the entertainment industry’s most recognizable figures. Even political figures made an appearance, with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Nancy Pelosi all reportedly in attendance.

The night reportedly closed out with a performance from the Black Eyed Peas, capping off an evening that organizers clearly designed to be as memorable as the museum itself. One particular group photo from the gala, featuring an array of legendary storytellers from across the film industry, quickly became a viral moment online in its own right.

Beyond the celebrity turnout, the museum itself represents a massive undertaking for Lucas, spanning 300,000 square feet and surrounded by 11 acres of landscaped gardens. Designed by architect Ma Yansong, the building houses more than 30 galleries dedicated to visual storytelling, ranging from prehistoric cave paintings to contemporary screen art.

The museum’s permanent collection is expected to include work from artists like Norman Rockwell, Jack Kirby, Frida Kahlo, Maxfield Parrish, and Jessie Willcox Smith across its five floors. It will also house the Lucas Archives, featuring models, props, and concept art pulled from Lucas’s decades-long filmmaking career.

“Stories are mythology, and when illustrated, they help humans understand the mysteries of life,” Lucas said in a statement shared by the museum, as reported by CBS News, capturing the guiding philosophy behind the institution’s sprawling collection.

With the opening night gala now behind it, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art was set to fully open to the public on September 22, marking the end of a construction process that began back in March 2018. For a city already packed with major cultural institutions, the museum’s arrival adds yet another significant destination centered entirely on the art of visual storytelling.

For Watson specifically, the appearance adds to a year that’s kept her firmly in the cultural conversation, both for her fashion choices and her continued public presence at major industry events. Between the guest list, the architecture, and the sheer scale of the celebration, the Lucas Museum’s opening night has already cemented itself as one of the defining Hollywood gatherings of the year.
