That question appears to have an answer, as Ackles was reportedly spotted filming a new mystery project this week, with the series being described as a “serial killer drama.” According to reports, Ackles has been seen filming in Toronto for a new Prime Video series widely believed to be ‘Rules of Prey,’ an adaptation of John Sandford’s long-running crime novel franchise.

Landing the role of Lucas Davenport, assuming the reports hold up, would give Ackles the opportunity to headline a series built on well-established source material rather than an original concept. Sandford’s Prey novels have built a massive following since ‘Rules of Prey’ was first published in 1989, following Davenport as he navigates politically sensitive and often gruesome cases for what eventually becomes the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The character has appeared in dozens of bestselling installments over the decades, giving any television adaptation a deep well of material to draw from if the series continues beyond its first season. That kind of built-in readership gives the project a level of brand recognition that ‘Countdown’ never had going into its debut.

For now, fans will have to wait for official confirmation from Prime Video before the casting becomes anything more than an educated guess based on set sightings and online speculation. Neither Ackles nor Prime Video has publicly confirmed his involvement in the project as of this writing.

‘Countdown’ starred Ackles as LAPD detective Mark Meachum, who gets recruited into a secret task force after a Department of Homeland Security officer is murdered in broad daylight. The series was created by Derek Haas, who spoke about the show’s ambitious stakes in an Entertainment Weekly cover story published over the summer.

“You want the stakes to be big. I’d done a lot of reading about what kind of things task forces are put together to thwart, so I thought: What’s bigger than a whole city being in jeopardy?” Haas told Entertainment Weekly about developing the series. Despite debuting to positive fanfare and ranking well within Nielsen’s charts over the summer, the show was ultimately canceled after a single season alongside Daniel Dae Kim’s spy thriller ‘Butterfly.’

This wouldn’t be Ackles’ first collaboration with the streamer if the ‘Rules of Prey’ speculation proves accurate. Beyond ‘Countdown,’ the actor has become a familiar face on Prime Video through his role as Soldier Boy in ‘The Boys,’ a part he’s set to reprise in the upcoming prequel series ‘Vought Rising.’

Ackles and his wife Danneel also run the production company Chaos Machine, which has held a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios in recent years. That ongoing relationship with the studio makes another Prime Video series a logical next step for the actor, regardless of whether the current rumors turn out to be accurate.

Given how quickly speculation has spread since the filming sighting broke, it likely won’t be long before more concrete details emerge about the project. Whether or not this turns out to be the confirmed ‘Rules of Prey’ adaptation, it’s clear Ackles isn’t slowing down after ‘Countdown’s’ early cancellation.
