Tom Cruise Shocks Fans With Jaw-Dropping New Hair at ‘Digger’ London Premiere

Tom Cruise has spent decades cultivating one of the most recognizable looks in Hollywood, making even the smallest deviation from his signature style enough to generate genuine buzz. That kind of attention followed him this week as he stepped out for one of the year’s most anticipated premieres.

The occasion marked a major moment for a project that’s been years in the making, bringing Cruise together with an acclaimed filmmaker known for pushing actors well outside their comfort zones. Cruise turned heads at the world premiere of ‘Digger‘ in London this week, debuting a striking bright-red hairstyle that swapped out his trademark brown hair for something considerably bolder. The eye-catching hair color comes on the heels of a much more extensive physical transformation Cruise underwent for his role in the film. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, ‘Digger’ finds Cruise disappearing into the role of eccentric oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, complete with a bodysuit and extensive prosthetic makeup that leaves him almost entirely unrecognizable on screen.

That transformation didn’t come easily, either. Speaking on Travis and Jason Kelce’s ‘New Heights’ podcast, Cruise revealed that the very first time the team applied his complete makeup, the process took a full six hours to complete. “The first time we did the makeup, it took six hours, OK?” Cruise told the Kelce brothers, explaining that the math simply didn’t work with his demanding filming schedule.

Rather than accepting that timeline, Cruise took matters into his own hands, bringing in a stopwatch and timing every stage of the application process alongside the makeup team. Through repeated practice and careful timing, what once consumed the better part of a morning was eventually reduced to less than an hour, allowing Cruise to maximize his time on set each day.

The heat generated by the prosthetics presented its own separate challenge during filming, with Cruise sweating heavily underneath the makeup during the production’s long takes. To manage that issue, the team developed a system involving cooling equipment, with crew members calling out “Digger up” when Cruise needed to perform and “Digger down” during breaks so he could stay close to the set rather than retreating to his trailer between takes.

Cruise has described working with Iñárritu on ‘Digger’ as a seven-year journey, drawn to the project specifically because of the director’s artistry and the chance to challenge himself creatively. That long gestation period makes this week’s London premiere feel like a genuine culmination for both collaborators, following years of development before cameras ever started rolling.

In the film, Digger helps trigger a catastrophic environmental disaster before embarking on a frantic mission to convince the world he’s humanity’s best chance at salvation. The satirical black comedy also stars Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, and Michael Stuhlbarg, rounding out an ensemble built to match Cruise’s willingness to disappear into the role.

‘Digger’ is set to hit theaters October 2, giving audiences their first proper look at just how far Cruise pushed himself physically for the role once the film reaches wide release.
