DC’s ‘Dynamic Duo’ Gets a New Release Date, and It’s Aimed Squarely at the Spider-Verse Crowd
Robin doesn’t get many turns in the spotlight. The last time the Boy Wonder was front and center in live action was 1997’s ‘Batman & Robin,’ and the last theatrically released animated movie to put him there was 2017’s ‘The LEGO Batman Movie.’ ‘Dynamic Duo‘ is meant to end that dry spell, and it’s doing it with a twist.
The film follows the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, the 2 Robins who each fought alongside Batman. It’s an animated feature that blends puppetry with animation, drawing on miniatures, models, animatronics and CGI. Swaybox, a New Orleans studio founded by Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson, is making it, with Mintz directing.
Now the wait for that unusual Batman spin-off has grown a little longer. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has moved the DC Studios film from June 30, 2028, to September 22, 2028. That’s a delay of less than 90 days, and the change was announced alongside a bigger schedule shakeup that also pushed ‘Gremlins 3’ back by nearly a year.
The studio has a clear strategy in mind. Warner Bros. distribution believes late September will work as a back-to-school slot for animation, one that can reach not only K-12 audiences but also teens and college kids. The studio also thinks the film has the potential to draw the same crowd that turned out for the Spider-Verse movies.
The new date has a practical benefit too. It moves the film away from Paramount’s live-action ‘Call of Duty’ movie, which is still set for June 30, 2028. There are no Paramount movies on September 22, 2028, though the new date does put it opposite an untitled DreamWorks animated film from Universal.
Some observers see a connection to the pending Warner Bros. and Paramount merger. Deadline, however, describes the shift as a coincidence and says the date changes are unrelated to the deal.
The delay also gives breathing room to the rest of DC’s Batman slate. ‘The Batman: Part II’ arrives on February 18, 2028, and moving ‘Dynamic Duo’ later gives that sequel extra space. ‘Clayface’ hits theaters on October 23, and ‘Man of Tomorrow’ follows on July 9, 2027.
The Spider-Verse comparison is worth watching. ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ is set for June 18, 2027, which means it will be out more than a year before ‘Dynamic Duo’ arrives. ComicBook.com argues that the pairing of iconic characters and a stylized, younger-skewing approach makes the Spider-Verse films the project to beat, though matching that success will be no easy task.
The production is a joint effort. Matt Reeves is producing through 6th & Idaho, while DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are executive producing. Deadline calls the movie the first joint project between DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, the label whose logo appears alongside DC Studios in the announcement art.
Matthew Aldrich, whose credits include ‘Coco’ and ‘Lightyear,’ wrote the script, with Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber later brought in for a rewrite. The story is an origin tale about 2 best friends pulled in opposite directions in Gotham City, with Dick following Batman and Jason falling in with the Red Hood gang.
It’s also separate from the main DC Universe. The film operates outside both the canon that Gunn and Safran oversee and Reeves’ Robert Pattinson movies.
The voice cast has been reported by insider Jeff Sneider, and Deadline’s coverage echoes it. Mason Thames is set to voice Dick Grayson and Logan Kim to voice Jason Todd, with Lee Pace and Steve Buscemi playing 2 versions of Red Hood.
Batman himself remains uncast. One report claims Chris Pine has been offered the role, but nothing is confirmed and negotiations have not started. That leaves one of the film’s biggest questions open with more than a year still to go.
For now, DC fans have a new date to circle and a fresh reason to be curious about one of the studio’s stranger bets. With puppetry-meets-animation visuals, a young voice cast and a back-to-school target, ‘Dynamic Duo’ is clearly aiming to stand out from the rest of the Batman pack.
