Florence Pugh Channels Old Hollywood Glamour in a Sultry ‘Tonight Show’ Appearance Ahead of Netflix’s East of Eden

Late-night couches are where a big publicity season officially begins, and few stars know how to make an entrance like Florence Pugh. After a run of major releases that included ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Dune: Part Two’, ‘We Live in Time’ and ‘Thunderbolts*’, she stepped back from the spotlight for a stretch. Florence Pugh’s ‘Tonight Show’ appearance suggests that break is officially over.

The timing is no accident. Pugh was booked on Monday’s episode of ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ alongside Josh Hartnett and musical guest Gracie Abrams, with a second stop on ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ scheduled for Wednesday. That is a serious NBC late-night push for a single week.

The image that lit up social media, though, was her look. Pugh wore a black off-the-shoulder mini dress with a draped neckline, strappy black platform heels and a delicate choker. Her golden hair was set in soft, voluminous waves, and she smiled in front of the show’s glittering New York skyline backdrop.

The styling struck a balance between polished and playful, which suits an actress about to headline a period drama. Vintage-inspired waves paired with a sleek little black dress made for a red-carpet-meets-late-night moment. It also gave fans plenty to share online, and the photos spread quickly.

The conversation with Fallon was not all glamour. Pugh and the host performed dramatic monologues written by autofill, a bit the show’s official account promoted as part of the night’s highlights. It was a light, silly counterpoint to the heavy material she is promoting.

That heavy material is Netflix’s ‘East of Eden‘, which starts streaming on Thursday. The limited series is Zoe Kazan’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, with Pugh playing the scheming antihero Cathy Ames. All seven episodes arrive at once, so there is no weekly wait.

The series has a family connection behind the scenes. Kazan’s grandfather, Oscar-winning filmmaker Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation starring James Dean. She has stressed that her version takes a very different approach, and that the movie was not a faithful adaptation of the small part of the book it covered.

Kazan clearly had one actress in mind for Cathy. She told Netflix Tudum that she had no backup choice, adding, “I think she’s a genius.” That is a big endorsement from the person who wrote and executive produced all seven episodes.

Pugh is far from alone in the Trask family saga. Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask and Mike Faist plays his brother Charles, while Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton and Ciarán Hinds round out the cast. The story follows Cathy as she drives a rift between two brothers, igniting a saga that unfolds across two generations.

Behind the camera, Garth Davis directed episodes 1 through 4, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed episodes 5 through 7. Kazan serves as co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart, and Pugh is an executive producer as well.

If the promotional blitz feels intense, her upcoming schedule explains why. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is set to reach theaters on December 18, with Pugh returning as Princess Irulan under director Denis Villeneuve. That gives her a Netflix prestige drama and a blockbuster sequel within a matter of weeks.

Further out, she is attached to lead and produce ‘The Midnight Library’, where she will play Nora Seed, a woman who finds herself in a library between life and death with the chance to experience all the potential lives she could have lived. Paramount reportedly won the project in a $36 million deal, beating out Focus Features and Sony. Pre-production is expected to begin this autumn, with filming kicking off next year.

For now, the spotlight belongs to Cathy Ames, and Pugh’s late-night turn is the opening act of a very busy stretch. Between the vintage glam and the autofill monologues, she looked entirely at home. Whether the series lands as well as her Fallon appearance did is the question fans will answer once they start streaming.
