‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Season 2 Episode 3 Recap and Ending Explained: Ellen Turns a Castle Siege Into a Battle Cry
Few moments in a prequel carry as much weight as the ones that quietly shape a family’s future. The latest chapter of ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood‘ leans into that idea, pairing a deadly siege with a secret that will ripple through the Highlands. If you’re searching for the ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ season 2 episode 3 recap and ending explained, here is what happened in ‘Rabbits Don’t Swim.’
The Starz prequel follows the parents of Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp, shifting between the 18th-century Highlands and the early 20th century. Season 2 premiered on Sept. 18, and the third installment arrived on Oct. 2. It follows an opening pair of episodes that focused heavily on Henry’s side of the story.
The episode begins with Brian and Dougal leading their men through the Highlands to join the rest of the Jacobite forces. Back at Lord Lovat’s home, Julia meets a new scullery maid named Seema, played by Lauren McQueen. Seema makes it clear she knows Henry, and she was reportedly his lady while he grieved. The Grants sent her to Lovat’s home supposedly for Julia’s protection, but Julia doesn’t buy it.
Julia ends up asking Lord Lovat to send Seema back to the Grants. Seema insists she is there to protect her, which only adds tension to an already fragile situation.
The main action happens at Castle Leoch. With Dougal and the others at war, James MacKinney, played by Ryan Fletcher, arrives with his son Robert and a handful of men to claim the castle. They kill the only guard and round up the women, leaving Colum to hold court alone.
Ellen’s timing saves her. She had left the dinner table after sparring with Maura, which turns out to be fortunate, and she ends up hiding in a secret passage. MacKinney demands the keys and the money, but Colum informs him that everything is registered in Ellen’s name, which Ned confirms.
MacKinney then crushes Colum’s hope that Dougal will come to the rescue. He reveals that Lord Lovat has thrown his lot in with the Crown, meaning the Frasers are leading the MacKenzies and the Jacobites into an ambush. That twist raises the stakes for everyone marching off to war.
Meanwhile, Ellen, played by Harriet Slater, takes action. When one of MacKinney’s men escorts the women to be locked up, she kills him with a bow and arrow. She and the women then use whatever they have on hand to defeat the intruders, from unleashing the clan’s dogs to pooling oil on the floor so the men slip. They also drop a tapestry on others in the chapel and stab through the fabric.

The victory comes at a cost. Janet MacKenzie is fatally stabbed in the scuffle and dies in Ellen’s arms. Before she does, she asks to be buried with flowers. The sisters share tender moments in the lead-up to the fight, which makes the loss land harder.
In the aftermath, Ellen reveals that she is pregnant. She promises that if she has a daughter, she will name her Janet. Maura, feeling out of place among the MacKenzies, decides to take her chances with MacKinney and leaves, though she refuses to betray the family and warns him of the Grants’ wrath. Robert also escapes near the exit.
The ending sets up the next stretch of the season. Ellen and a couple of the women who work for the family head out to warn Brian and Dougal about Lovat’s betrayal, and the episode closes with Ellen racing to the front on horseback with a critical message. It is a reminder that the war will not be waiting for them.
The episode also stirs a lingering secret. Ellen jilted Maura’s brother Malcolm before marrying Dougal somewhat against her will, and Maura still doesn’t know Ellen had a hand in his death. That revelation could be a big reveal later in the season.

The next episode, ‘A Portion of My Soul,’ airs Oct. 9, with new episodes arriving Fridays on the Starz app at midnight and on the Starz channel at 8 p.m. ET. The series hasn’t been renewed for a third season, though Starz has invested in building out the franchise after the flagship series ended in May. Ellen’s race to warn the army will likely define the next hour.
