The ‘Barbershop‘ franchise started small and turned into a lasting piece of pop culture. The original 2002 film, with Ice Cube as Chicago barbershop owner Calvin Palmer Jr., was made on a $12 million budget and grossed $77 million worldwide. It was followed by ‘Barbershop 2: Back in Business’ in 2004 and ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’ in 2016.

The franchise didn’t stop at the big screen. It also produced a spin-off, ‘Beauty Shop,’ with Queen Latifah, and across its 4 films it has grossed more than $235 million worldwide. A long-running mix of sharp humor and neighborhood heart is what kept audiences coming back to Calvin’s.

Now the shop is about to reopen on streaming. Prime Video shared the first trailer for the ‘Barbershop’ sequel series, which follows a man who returns to honor his grandfather’s legacy by running the iconic Calvin’s barbershop. The trailer features a line that sums up the show’s appeal, “When I was a kid, this barbershop was magic.”

The series arrives on Prime Video on Feb. 10, 2027, with all 8 episodes available at once. The man at its center is Travis “Trav” Walker, played by Jermaine Fowler. He returns to Chicago to carry on his grandfather’s legacy, but the shop has changed, and so has the city.

According to the official synopsis, Trav has to find his place among a new crew of barbers and loyal customers. Calvin’s remains what it’s always been, a place for sharp fades, sharp opinions and a community with something to say. That hints at a show built around the same barbershop banter that made the movies popular.

The ensemble is stacked with comedy talent. Brett Gray, Punkie Johnson, Roy Wood Jr., E.J. Bonilla, Bresha Webb, Bokeem Woodbine, Tiana Okoye and Langston Kerman round out the cast. Guest stars include Zack Fox, Ego Nwodim and Tituss Burgess.

There’s also a strong link to the original film behind the scenes. Marshall Todd, who co-wrote the 2002 ‘Barbershop,’ is writing, executive producing and co-showrunning with Max Searle. Oz Rodriguez executive produces and directs, and Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat is among the production companies.

Prime Video announced the series in May 2025, and the road to Feb. 10 has been steady. The streamer released two first-look photos on Sept. 30 before debuting a teaser at CultureCon, where Fowler and Brett Gray appeared. That rollout suggests Amazon MGM Studios is treating the revival as a priority.

The timing leaves plenty for the show to talk about. ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’ made $55 million worldwide on a $20 million budget in 2016, and the series is set to pick up the conversation more than 20 years after the original. As one outlet put it, there are certainly plenty of new topics for Calvin’s customers to argue about.

If the trailer is any indication, the series is aiming to keep the original’s warmth while giving a new generation its own chairs. With the premiere about 4 months away, fans only have to wait until February to find out whether Calvin’s still feels like magic.
