‘Chicago P.D.‘ is back on Wednesday, October 7 at 10/9c on NBC, and Intelligence is returning in a very different shape. The long summer wait is finally over, and the new season has plenty of unfinished business to settle.

If you want the essentials on the ‘Chicago P.D.’ return, this guide covers the date, the time, where to stream it and what to expect from the first episodes. There is a big moral cliffhanger to resolve, and one of the show’s original faces is about to say goodbye.

‘Chicago P.D. ‘Season 14 Release Date and Time

The season premieres on Wednesday, October 7 at 10/9c on NBC, which keeps the show in its familiar Wednesday night home. The network confirmed the date earlier than many fans expected, and the show follows ‘Chicago Med’ and ‘Chicago Fire’ in the lineup.

‘Chicago Med’ kicks off the night at 8/7c, ‘Chicago Fire’ follows at 9/8c, and ‘Chicago P.D.’ closes things out. That makes the whole evening a full One Chicago block for anyone who likes to binge their favorites in one sitting.

NBC renewed the drama on March 27, and the reason was simple. It remains a ratings hit for the network and ran ahead of other renewed shows in both the key demo and total viewers. Production on the new season was set to begin July 23, so the cast has been busy since the summer.

Where to Watch ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 14?

The easiest option is live on NBC, either through a traditional cable package or through any streaming service that carries your local NBC station. If you cannot catch the broadcast, there is a simple backup plan.

New episodes will stream the next day on Peacock. All 13 earlier seasons are also available to stream on Peacock, so newcomers and lapsed viewers have plenty of time to catch up before the premiere.

That catch up window matters more than usual this year. The finale left a heavy cliffhanger, and the character relationships that drive the premiere only make sense if you remember how last season ended.

‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 14 Premiere Preview

The premiere is titled ‘Demolition’, and it has to address the aftermath of last season’s finale cliffhanger. Voight was left deciding whether to follow the law or protect a victim whose entire life had been stolen from her, after evidence showed Shari, not her captor Kirby, had committed a murder.

Arienne Mandi, who plays Eva Imani, gave a preview to TV Insider, explaining that the premiere is set three months later and reveals whether Voight turns Shari in. She also said Imani still holds on to hope for a relationship, noting that it is in her nature to be hopeful.

Intelligence also investigates a parole officer’s shooting in the premiere, and Voight is forced to let an outsider into the office. That detail suggests the unit’s usual closed circle is about to be tested, and it may be only the beginning of the shake ups.

‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 14 Cast Changes and What Comes Next

The biggest headline is the exit of an original cast member. LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Kevin Atwater, is leaving the series in the new season, according to Deadline. He has starred as Atwater since the show premiered in 2014.

Hawkins was reported to appear in only a couple of episodes to wrap up Atwater’s storyline, and he filmed his final episode on August 13. The premiere is part of his final run, so fans will want to savor every scene. Jesse Lee Soffer is set to direct the second episode, which has fueled speculation that it could play a key role in the farewell.

There is already a likely story path. In the previous season Atwater reconnected with Officer Tasha Fox, who moved to Miami before returning with the news that she was pregnant. The simplest and happiest way to write him out would be for Atwater to move away and raise the baby together with her, although other more dramatic options have been floated.

Behind the scenes, there is a leaner approach as well. All of the One Chicago shows put cost cutting measures in place before last season, and those remain in effect. Even so, the combination of a major goodbye, a lingering murder case and a new face joining the office gives the season a real sense of change.

Voight has bent the rules for his people for years, but protecting Shari could finally cost him more than he can afford, and Atwater’s exit means Intelligence will feel the loss either way, so do you think Voight should keep Shari’s secret or finally follow the law this time, and how should Atwater’s goodbye play out for the unit?
