Video game adaptations have finally found their footing on screen, and Prime Video’s ‘Fallout’ helped prove that a beloved PlayStation-style world can translate into a hit series. Few projects carry more weight than the live-action ‘God of War’, a story built on a gruff Spartan-turned-god and the son he is learning to raise. Fans have been watching its development closely, and not always happily.

Amazon greenlit the series at the end of 2022, and two years later Amazon and Sony replaced the creative team and brought in Ronald D. Moore as showrunner. The co-production between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, has a two-season order. Filming began in February with Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus.

Now a new report says the show will shoot its first and second seasons back-to-back and recast Atreus, along with Thrud, along the way. It is the latest twist in a production that has already been through plenty of changes.

The recast appears to be a creative decision rather than a scramble. Casting calls that surfaced in August sought actors aged 14 to 17 to play Atreus and Thrud, compared with 9 to 12 for the original search. Both characters were listed as teen versions, and the description for Atreus says he finds his new identity and grows into manhood.

That points to a time jump. The first season is expected to follow the 2018 ‘God of War‘ game, while the second would move into the events of ‘God of War Ragnarök’, where both characters are several years older. With the seasons filming together, there is no time for child actors to age naturally.

Vinson, known for ‘Chucky’ and ‘The Night Agent’, has played Atreus in the first season, while Island Austin, from ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’, plays Thrud. The latest report does not make clear whether the recast applies only to the second season or also to a restarted first season.

The first-look photo of Hurst and Vinson released in February drew heavy criticism online, with franchise creator David Jaffe among those who trashed it. The bigger blow came in late June, when Hurst tore a bicep performing a stunt roughly four months into filming. Recovery would have pushed production into 2027.

Rather than wait, Amazon and Sony recast Kratos, and Variety reported on August 20 that Dave Bautista, 57, would take over the role. Four completed episodes and additional scenes filmed further into the season will have to be reshot. Production was expected to resume in Vancouver in mid-October.

Reaction to Bautista has been mixed. Some fans praised his size and presence, while others questioned whether he could reach the character’s imposing frame on such a tight schedule. Hurst has yet to make a public statement about being recast.

Shooting two seasons together is a major commitment, and it is how the production hoped to save time and money. It was originally expected to wrap in April 2027, though the hiatus and reshoots could push that further. It also explains why the studio wants the age-ups handled in one go rather than waiting for the cast to grow.

The approach has risks. Recasting three major roles before a single episode has aired, as the lead and two key supporting characters now stand to be, raises questions about continuity and about how audiences will respond. There are also real costs in reshooting finished work, even if the studio hopes the changes will improve the final product.

The rest of the ensemble includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor and Teresa Palmer as Sif. Alastair Duncan reprises Mimir from the games, and Jeff Gulka and Danny Woodburn play Sindri and Brok. Cory Barlog, who led the 2016 game and ‘Ragnarök’, is an executive producer.

Amazon has not announced a release date, though the recast points toward 2027 at the earliest. For now, the studio has only confirmed the broad outlines, so much of this latest news should be treated as a report rather than an official announcement.

What do you think about recasting Atreus for the 'God of War' series?
