‘NCIS: Origins’ Season 3 Episode 2 Recap and Ending Explained: Gibbs Calls In an Old Favor
Some of the best ‘NCIS‘ stories are about the debts people owe each other. Gibbs has spent decades collecting loyalty without ever asking for it, and the people he helped have long memories. ‘NCIS: Origins’ used its latest episode to show what happens when a favor from 1992 comes due in the present.
The episode, titled ‘My Own Worst Enemy’, aired Tuesday, October 13, on CBS. Present-day Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon, left Alaska to seek help from an old friend, while the 1992 timeline, with Austin Stowell as the young Gibbs, centered on Woody, played by Bobby Moynihan in the present. Spoilers follow for the full episode and its ending.
The premiere ended with Gibbs shot at his Alaska cabin by 2 people, one of whom said “one down, one to go” before leaving him for dead. He survived with a Marine breathing technique that slowed his heart rate and made his pulse impossible to find. Then he stitched himself up, and used the same method Franks used in the 1990s to lift a fingerprint from his neck where one of the shooters had checked for a pulse.
This week, he left Alaska to identify that print. The person who could help was Woody, who greets him with a joke about how he is still stunning. It is a warm reunion, but it quickly becomes complicated.
Woody does not have the clearance to see a file once it has been hidden in AFIS, the fingerprint database, so he cannot simply run the print. That is where the history comes in. In 1992, the team banded together to help Woody when he was accused of murdering a bowling rival.
The victim, Sheila, bowled in the same league as Woody, and he had a motive. NCIS was forced to detain him, because he was a federal agent who could not be investigated by one of his own. Gibbs flew back when he heard, and he was the one who ultimately solved the case.
Woody was about to be charged when Gibbs figured out how the real culprit had broken into his house. That showed the evidence against him had been set up, and Gibbs helped get him out of what amounted to a fake charge. It also fit the pattern of the show’s flashbacks, which have built a backstory for members of the team, including Wheeler, Mary Jo and Gary Callahan.
The case also gave the ensemble a chance to rally. Caleb Foote’s Randy, Kyle Schmid’s Franks and the rest of the team pushed back against Woody’s resistance to being seen as one of them. In the end, the people he did not think he could rely on were the ones who saved him.

Back in the present, that old favor is why Gibbs went to Woody at all. Woody could not unlock the file, but the episode makes clear that the bond between them is real, and Gibbs leaves his dog with him in return for that favor from long ago. Then Gibbs heads to Washington, D.C., to see Tony DiNozzo.
That final move sets up the next installment, ‘Return of the Mack’, which airs October 20 and reunites Harmon and Michael Weatherly on screen for the first time in a decade. Tony is now NCIS director, so he can reach information that Woody could not. The episode is built to deliver Gibbs to that meeting.
Reviewers noted that the season is set up for Gibbs to work through everyone who could be the other target, only to arrive at the obvious one: Lala. If the series is the story of Gibbs and Lala, then she has to be alive in the present. The show has not confirmed that, and the question of why nobody has heard of her remains open.

The theme running through the hour is family. As one review put it, the show has always understood that your team is a pack, and a pack does not leave one of its own alone. That idea ties the 1992 case to the present-day search, since Gibbs does not know which member of his pack is in danger, only that it is someone he cares about.
‘NCIS: Origins’ airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on CBS. With the unknown shooters still out there, a fingerprint that needs a bigger name to read and an overdue meeting between Gibbs and Tony, the season has plenty of momentum. The mystery of the second target should become clearer very soon.
Is Lala the Second Target in 'NCIS: Origins' Season 3?
