Elizabeth Debicki Turns Heads in Head-to-Toe Leather at New York’s ‘Wicker’ Screening

Elizabeth Debicki has never been an actor who does things by half measures, and her current slate proves it. Between a spy-thriller return, a major Netflix project and a gloriously strange fairy tale about a man made of twigs, the Emmy winner has plenty on her plate, and the buzz around Elizabeth Debicki’s ‘Wicker‘ press run keeps growing.

That fairy tale is ‘Wicker’, the offbeat romantic comedy that premiered at Sundance in January to a standing ovation and strong reviews. With its theatrical rollout now just around the corner, the cast has been out in force to keep the conversation going.

That push brought Debicki to New York on Oct. 13, where she was spotted heading out from a screening of the film. She went for a sleek, all-black leather look: a glossy button-up shirt paired with a matching knee-length pencil skirt, finished with pointed black pumps and a small black bag with a chain strap.

The outfit leaned on texture rather than color. The oversized, slightly draped shirt softened the structure of the skirt, and the polished accessories kept everything clean and controlled. Her blonde hair, worn loose and wavy, added a touch of movement to an otherwise razor-sharp ensemble.

It was a notably different mood from her Sundance premiere appearance in January, when she wore Bottega Veneta. Whatever the occasion, Debicki has a knack for turning a press appearance into a style moment.

Based on the short story ‘The Wicker Husband’ by Ursula Wills-Jones, the film follows an ostracized fisherwoman played by Olivia Colman. Fed up with her small-minded neighbors, she commissions the local basketmaker, played by Peter Dinklage, to build her a husband out of wicker. Alexander Skarsgård plays the creation, stepping in for Dev Patel, who was originally attached in 2023.

Debicki plays the Tailor’s Wife, one of the villagers unsettled by the Fisherwoman’s increasingly enviable new relationship. Her character gives the town’s jealousy a very visible face as the unconventional romance sparks outrage and chaos.

The film’s craft is as eye-catching as its premise. Skarsgård’s Wicker Husband suit was built practically by Joe Dunckley and Weta Workshop, rather than relying on digital effects. The film was directed and adapted by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the duo behind ‘Save Yourselves!’, and it runs about 105 minutes with a recorder-driven score by Anna Meredith.

Early reviews have been glowing. One Sundance review awarded it 5 out of 5, praising the performances of Colman, Dinklage, Debicki and Skarsgård alike.

‘Wicker’ also reunites Debicki with Colman, who previously shared the screen with her on ‘The Crown’ and ‘The Night Manager’. Debicki appeared opposite Colman and Tom Hiddleston in the second season of the latter. Fans of that chemistry have good reason to be excited.

The marketing has leaned into the film’s oddball charm as well. After the first trailer arrived at the end of July, the footage spread online, and even IKEA joined in with a wicker-themed joke.

Black Bear will release ‘Wicker’ in limited theaters on Oct. 23 before expanding nationwide on Oct. 30. The studio will also handle the UK and Canadian releases, the latter through its subsidiary Elevation Pictures.

More events are on the calendar too. A KCRW partner screening at Vidiots in Los Angeles on Oct. 18 will be followed by a conversation with the directors and cast members Colman, Skarsgård and Debicki.

Debicki’s year is far from over. She stars in David Fincher’s sequel to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, in which Brad Pitt returns as Cliff Booth, and it’s set for IMAX on Nov. 25 and Netflix on Dec. 23. That follows a run of acclaim for her portrayal of Princess Diana in ‘The Crown’, which earned her Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards.
