Ian McKellen has been giving Magneto his gravitas since the 2000 film ‘X-Men’, where he first appeared alongside Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and James Marsden’s Cyclops. Few comic book performances have aged as gracefully, and fans have long hoped he would get one more turn behind the helmet. That wish is finally coming true.

McKellen is returning as Magneto in Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. The film brings the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and the Wakandans together, with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. One teaser even ended with a simple line confirming that the X-Men will return.

Now a striking new piece of promotional-style artwork has surfaced. Credited to HEXFacility, the image shows McKellen’s Magneto standing with his arms outstretched in a crimson costume, a gray cape billowing around him and purple lightning crackling in the background. It’s the kind of dramatic pose that wouldn’t look out of place on a classic comic cover.

The costume leans heavily on red, with a high-collared tunic, matching pants, tall black boots and the signature helmet. A belt with an X-shaped buckle sits at the waist, leaving no confusion about which side the mutant is on. Wavy gray hair spills out from beneath the helmet.

Those details line up with the first official look at the character. Marvel Studios debuted the costume through a Hot Toys collectible, which showed a design with more red than any of McKellen’s previous Magneto looks. The figure also features a helmet sculpt and a detailed portrait of the actor.

It’s worth keeping some perspective. The HEXFacility artwork is part of a large collection of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ posters, with at least 25 circulating online. Many are comic-style illustrations, and reports note that such art may not reflect the characters’ final on-screen designs.

Some of the pieces borrow the look of vintage comic covers, complete with a corner box featuring the Marvel Studios logo and an emblem combining the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men symbols. Others center Doctor Doom or show the Doombots, his mechanical doubles. That makes the Magneto piece a fun preview, but not necessarily a final frame.

McKellen has also dropped hints about how Magneto will be used. He has said he destroys New Jersey in a major sequence, and he described filming a scene where he stood in the wind and tried to look furious. His comments suggest the character has a big, destructive moment in the film.

That matches the character’s history. Magneto has always been a figure of power and conviction, someone who can be as frightening as he is sympathetic. A film built around multiversal stakes seems like the perfect stage for him.

McKellen is far from alone. Stewart returns as Professor X, Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Kelsey Grammer as Beast. Channing Tatum also appears as Gambit.

The legacy lineup is a major selling point. Marvel’s trailers have offered only brief glimpses of McKellen’s Magneto and Stewart’s Xavier, so every new piece of art fuels speculation. San Diego Comic-Con 2026 gave fans a trailer focused on Doom, but the X-Men have largely been kept in the shadows.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens in theaters on December 18, 2026. Its follow-up, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, is set for December 17, 2027. The Russos have also said Marvel hasn’t revealed its full cast yet, which keeps the surprises coming.

For longtime fans, seeing McKellen back in the cape is a nostalgic thrill. If the final film delivers on the promise of this art, Magneto could be one of the standout moments of the entire event.
