‘Wicker’ Star Elizabeth Debicki Shimmers Like Liquid Metal at the Academy Museum Gala in Custom Balmain
Elizabeth Debicki has become one of the most reliable names on the red carpet circuit. The Australian actress seems to treat every gala as a chance to show off her statuesque frame in something sculptural, and this season has been no different. Her appearance at the Academy Museum Gala only added to that streak.
This year’s edition was the 6th annual event, held Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. Charlize Theron was honored with the Icon Award, Colman Domingo with the Vantage Award and John Carpenter with the Luminary Award, with Taylor Swift set to perform. One fashion outlet described the carpet as comparatively low-key next to last year’s daring moments, with plenty of guests going classic in black and adding a twist through texture and softly draped silhouettes.
Debicki took a different route, arriving in a custom Balmain halter gown made from a shimmery, champagne-beige metallic fabric. The liquid-looking lamé jersey caught the light with every move, which made her one of the most photographed guests on the carpet. It was glamorous, simple and unmistakably her.

The gown has a high, folded halter neck, a bare back and arms, and soft draping across the front. At the hip, the fabric gathers into a big loose knot, with one long tail hanging down the front of the skirt. A sweeping train trails behind her, so the silhouette reads clean from the front and dramatic from behind.
The dress comes from Antonin Tron’s Balmain, and the laminated jersey gives it that wet-look sheen. The minimal construction lets the fabric do most of the work. Nothing is overdone, yet the shine makes it feel like a showpiece.

The accessories were just as considered. She chose ornate gold drop earrings from Sabyasachi, which stood out against the cool metallic of the dress, plus a couple of slim gold rings. Her blonde hair was styled in vintage waves that gave the look an old-Hollywood softness.
She also wore flats with such a long dress, a practical touch that suits a tall frame and keeps the focus on the gown’s sweep. The relaxed footwear balanced the formality of the train and made the whole outfit feel effortless.

This is the latest in a streak of standout moments. At the 2026 Met Gala in May, she wore a custom Vera Wang ivory gown with sculpted draping, a halter back and a black sash train, paired with a diamond tiara. Last year at the Academy Museum Gala she chose Armani Privé, in a sleek black gown with a sculpted corset-style bodice and metallic striped detailing.
Seen side by side, the three outfits show how she moves between structure and softness. The 2025 gala look was all clean lines in black, while this year’s gown leans into fluid shine and gentle draping. It’s a clear evolution that suits her.

Debicki wasn’t alone in embracing the neckline. Emmy Rossum wore a black halter-neck gown with a high slit, and Mckenna Grace chose a red halter gown. Debicki also posed with Adria Arjona, Mariana di Girolamo and Gemma Chan, forming one of the night’s more stylish groupings.
Against that backdrop, her metallic version stood out for its fabric. Where others used color or a slit for impact, she let a single shimmering material carry the look.
The glamour comes with some big career momentum. Debicki stars opposite Brad Pitt in ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’, the David Fincher-directed sequel to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, which is set to arrive on Netflix later in 2026. She has said the shoot lasted nearly six months in Los Angeles and that she loved working with both Fincher and Pitt.
She also premiered ‘Wicker’ at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and recently appeared in season 2 of ‘The Night Manager’. Her portrayal of Princess Diana in ‘The Crown’ earned her Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice awards in 2024. With a slate like that, the red carpet appearances keep building a profile that is only getting bigger.
The Academy Museum Gala raises money for the museum’s exhibitions, public screenings and education programs, and it is often called the Met Gala of the West. It also lands right after the worldwide fashion weeks, so plenty of guests arrive in runway pieces. Debicki’s custom gown fit that mold while keeping things refreshingly simple.
