Netflix’s ‘Empress of Flames’ First Look Reveals a Thai Throne War Where Revenge Burns Hotter Than Any Crown
Few story types travel across cultures as easily as a fight for the throne. Betrayal, exile and a hunger for revenge work just as well in a palace in Southeast Asia as in any fantasy kingdom. Netflix is betting on that appeal with one of its biggest Thai originals yet.
The streamer has been building up its Thai slate this year, from thrillers to courtroom dramas, and ‘Empress of Flames‘ is positioned as a centerpiece. The series comes from Kantana Motion Pictures, the production house behind the hit ‘Master of the House,’ and is directed by Karn Sivaroj Kongsakul. The writing team includes Titipong Chaisati, Nuttapot Potchumnean, Gift Nattamol Paethanom, Nut Nualpang and Jan Weerasu Worrapot.
Now Netflix has unveiled the first look at ‘Empress of Flames,’ a fresh take on an iconic Thai tale of vengeance for the throne. The Thai historical drama premieres worldwide on December 3, only on Netflix, and the first images show its leads in lavish period costume. The announcement also lays out the full story and the thinking behind the production.

The story unfolds in the Thipaya Kingdom, a realm ruled by the Thipayawongse Dynasty for over 300 years. The throne eventually passed to Queen Tawanthip, played by Khemanit Jamikorn, the feared “Demonic Queen,” whose reign was marked by ruthless brutality. King Phuka, played by Napasranch Mittiraroch, ended her tyranny and spared her bloodline, ushering in an era of peace.
That peace lasts 18 years. Buraphakham, played by Pakorn Chatborrirak and the eldest heir of Queen Tawanthip, leads a bloody rebellion and assassinates King Phuka before the entire court. The only survivor is Ananthip, played by Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul, who loses everything and is driven into exile.

The disgrace transforms Ananthip from a compassionate princess into a calculating strategist determined to restore her dynasty’s honor. Her path back is filled with betrayal and conspiracy. Sekharathewi, played by Narilya Gulmongkolpech, is a Thipayawongse heir and once-cherished friend who becomes an implacable rival.
Muang Khum, played by Prin Suparat, is the man she loves and her final sanctuary. Tongnual, played by Amanda Obdam, is a princess from the Kingdom of Meed who uses her charm and wealth as a passport to power. Stripped of her legitimacy time and again, Ananthip finally gives in to the fire within.
Sivaroj says he approached the project without leaning on earlier adaptations. “I had never watched any of the previous versions of Empress of Flames before,” he said in the Netflix announcement. He explained that he started with the original story and wanted to preserve its heart while adding more detail and depth to the characters and their life journeys.
Pimchanok, who recently starred in the Netflix action-thriller ‘My Dearest Assassin,’ described how she prepared for such a demanding role. “I want viewers to see her loneliness, the pain of her losses, and the struggles she faces, and understand why she has to stand up and fight,” she said. She added that she took part in additional workshops and discussed the character’s direction with the director.
The production design team created an entirely new world for the series, including a map that establishes each city’s location, way of life and history. That is why the costumes vary from city to city, reflecting each character’s identity and origins. Costume designer Rattanarat Aurthaveekul said the team blended Asian and Southeast Asian elements rather than basing the looks on any single country.
The sets are also designed to tell a story of their own. The throne room of the Thipaya Kingdom was built from scratch, and its design conveys both the perspective of those seated above and those kneeling beneath its power. Large supporting-cast scenes help fill out the fantasy world.
Netflix describes the project as an epic reimagined by the creators of ‘Master of the House,’ and it is clearly meant to make a statement. Khemanit’s Queen Tawanthip is a new character who adds a deeper layer to the story, allowing viewers to explore the reasons behind the destruction and war. Coverage of the series has called it one of the more significant Thai originals the streamer has released.
For viewers who enjoy sprawling period drama, the timing is good, with the premiere set for the start of December. The first look suggests a show with real scale, built around characters who are driven by grudges as much as ambition. If it lives up to that promise, it could become one of the platform’s standout international dramas of the year.
