‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Could Return to Night City, but Only If the Stars Align, Says Its Showrunner

Few anime sequels have had as much to live up to as ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.’ The original became a cult phenomenon, winning multiple awards and drawing praise for its writing, characters, action and animation. Four years later, fans finally got a second trip to Night City.

The new series premiered on Netflix on October 20, with all 10 episodes dropping at once. Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red reunited for a standalone story with a fresh crew, with Kai Ikarashi directing and Bartosz Sztybor back as showrunner, story writer and producer. It is set in 2078, a year after ‘Cyberpunk 2077.’

Now that the binge is over, the obvious question has arrived. Sztybor has addressed whether a third chapter is possible, and his answer is hopeful but carefully conditional.

Speaking to ComicBook, Sztybor began with a shrug of optimism: you never know, and there are a lot of stories to tell in Night City and beyond. He then explained that the approach at CD Projekt Red is that there always needs to be a perfect story, along with a perfect director, artist or studio capable of pulling it off. If the stars align and the team can create something high quality again, then the answer is yes.

The flip side is just as clear. If there is no perfect story or no director with a unique voice, he said, it might end up as “just two Edgerunners.” It’s not a no, but it’s not a promise either.

The caution fits how the team has treated the franchise from the start. Sztybor has said that after dozens of drafts and many hours of brainstorms with Studio Trigger, the story of David and Lucy was chosen as the one that would work best in the anime format. The same philosophy applies to the comics and other ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ projects, which are often self-contained mini-series.

When writing the first series, he already had other ideas in mind. But he decided the best approach was a story that acts as a mirror and a dialogue with season 1. That is exactly what ‘Edgerunners 2’ became.

In a separate conversation, Sztybor told GameSpot that he does not know whether a perfect story will come, and then added that “there are definitely more stories to tell in this world.” He also said that if a new season goes into production, viewers can expect more threads from the wider ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ universe to be woven in.

He has described the sequel as sharing its core themes with the original, with love and parenthood as the connective tissue. He has also said he wanted ‘Edgerunners 2’ to feel like Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction,’ with a few characters who eventually connect.

Netflix’s own listing now describes the show as one where Night City has a new story every season and a new crew to tell it. That strongly positions ‘Edgerunners’ as an anthology rather than a single ongoing saga. It also means a future chapter wouldn’t need to follow D and his crew.

Nothing has been announced, and Netflix and CD Projekt Red have not confirmed another season. It also took 4 years to get from the first season to the second, so patience will be required.

The finale also helps explain why the door isn’t fully closed. The main four characters, D, Talia, Weak and Roman, are not confirmed dead, which is a major structural difference from the first season. The fate of D and Capri remains uncertain.

That ambiguity gives any future story something to work with, whether or not the team returns to these characters. It’s another sign that the creators leave room for the world to keep growing.

Meanwhile, the wider franchise is moving ahead. CD Projekt Red released Update 2.5 for ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ on October 22, featuring content inspired by the anime. That update, along with the series itself, shows how closely the games and the anime are linked.

For fans, the takeaway is simple. A third chapter is possible, but it will only happen if the story and the filmmakers are right.
