Teen supernatural dramas have a way of finding devoted audiences, especially when they mix magic, romance and secrets inside a boarding school. Fans of the genre have been hungry for something new, and Disney has been experimenting with how to serve it. ‘Coven Academy’ is the latest bet, and it’s already paying off.

Created by Tim Federle, the series follows three teenage witches-in-training in New Orleans, along with their warlock peers, at an elite school for magic. Briar, a fiercely independent New Yorker who discovers she’s a witch, leads the story. The show premiered on October 1 on Freeform, and the full season arrived on Disney+ and Hulu the next day.

Barely three weeks later, Disney has made its decision. ‘Coven Academy’ has been renewed for a second season, according to a Monday announcement.

The renewal comes amid strong viewership. According to Disney, the first season racked up 20.3 million global hours in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu. An additional 30 million-plus views came after the first chapter was made available on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

Federle will continue as executive producer on season 2, and the series is produced by his Chorus Boy Productions in association with Disney Kids & Family. He created ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ and is working on the upcoming ‘Romy and Michele’ sequel. Season 1’s episodes were directed by all-female directors, apart from the pilot, which Federle directed.

The show followed an unusual release strategy. Instead of typical hour-long installments, it used short episodes designed for audiences used to short-form entertainment. All 21 episodes arrived on streaming at once, which made the series easy to binge.

Freeform aired the episodes in weekly blocks throughout October as part of its Halloween programming. The project was originally ordered for Disney Channel before moving to Freeform. That flexible approach seems to have helped the show reach younger viewers where they already spend their time.

Federle has offered hints about where the story might go. Speaking with TVLine, he said Briar will likely confront Miss Graves with a lot of questions about why she was given away and the details around her birth. He also said Ollie will likely return to Bristol to come out as a vampire to his family.

Tegan will stay by McKenna’s side through whatever comes next, and Federle promised to be “really mindful of the tropes around queer tragedy.” Earlier, he told D23 that the first season was built as a longer story that could lead into future seasons.

Malina Pauli Weissman leads as Briar, with Malachi Barton as Jake, Jordan Leftwich as Sasha, Ora Duplass as Tegan and Louis Thresher as Ollie. Tiffani Thiessen plays Miss Graves, the formidable head of the academy, and Devon Sawa guest stars as Mr. Cole. Swayam Bhatia recurs as McKenna.

Federle serves as showrunner alongside Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer. The executive producer team also includes Amanda Row and Bronwyn North-Reist, among others.

Part of the series’ success appears to come from its online presence. The first chapter was shared on social platforms, where it earned millions of views, and that created a pipeline from short clips to the full season. For a Disney property aimed at teens, that strategy may become a model.

TheWrap reported that the series brought in 11 million hours viewed in its first week and ranked among the top five streaming series among all viewers. That early momentum likely helped speed up the renewal decision.

Plenty of details are still missing. Disney has not announced a premiere date, a production timetable or an episode count for season 2. Casting news is also pending, though the main ensemble is expected to return.

For now, fans can revisit the first season, which is streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. With questions about Briar’s origins and several storylines still open, there is plenty to look forward to.
