Doctor Doom Takes Over an Osaka Cinema Lobby as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Marketing Reaches Japan

Marvel has never been shy about turning a movie release into a full-blown spectacle. As ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ nears its debut, the studio’s biggest villain has been popping up in theaters, expos and merchandise shelves around the globe.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom has become the face of that campaign. Marvel has spent months teasing him in pieces, from promotional art to collectibles, while the film’s marketing leans heavily on his throne and his green-soaked Latverian aesthetic.

Now Japan has its own imposing tribute to the villain. A cinema in Osaka has launched a special decoration event themed around the eve of ‘Doomsday’, and a statue of Doctor Doom has made its grand debut in the theater’s lobby.

The display is open for anyone to see. Photos from the cinema show Doom in full regalia, wearing his signature metal mask beneath a dark green hood, with a chain draped across his armored chest. In one image his arms are crossed, giving him a suitably unimpressed look.

The venue even added a playful warning, asking visitors not to touch the statue so as not to anger him. It also encouraged people to snap plenty of photos, which is exactly what a three-dimensional promotional piece like this is designed to inspire.

The event also doubles as a reminder of the release date. The cinema confirmed that the film opens in Japan on Thursday, December 18, the same day as its U.S. release.

That simultaneous release has been in the works for a while. Japanese outlets reported back in July 2025 that the film, retitled ‘アベンジャーズ/ドゥームズデイ’ in Japan, would open on the same day in both countries. Walt Disney Japan is handling distribution.

Earlier this year, limited-time lobby displays with large banners and standees appeared in cinemas across the country, timed to build excitement as ticket sales ramped up. The Osaka statue takes that push a step further. Instead of flat artwork, fans now get a Doom to pose next to.

Japan is far from alone. Marvel showed a giant replica of Doom’s throne at an expo in Shanghai and later brought a version to the Philippines. A giant Doctor Doom statue was also unveiled in Shanghai, drawing attention for its size.

In the United States, an AMC theater standee placed Doom on his throne with the tagline “12.18.26 is Doomsday”. Cinemark revealed a collector’s popcorn bucket sculpted as Doom’s hooded metal mask with glowing green eyes, plus a matching cup showing him seated on the stone throne.

Argentina got in on it too, with a theater showing a Doom statue inside a lit glass case that glows green. A sign there notes that the film opens on December 16.

Marvel has also been unveiling statues and displays at theaters worldwide, including a life-size Doom with silver-plated armor and a flowing green cape. One recent version showed the villain without his hood for the first time in the entire marketing tour.

It’s easy to see why the studio keeps leaning on him. Doom is the central villain of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with Downey returning to the MCU in a very different role than the one he left behind.

The campaign has also been paying off in other ways. Reports say the film has shattered Disney’s presale record in Germany, beating ‘Endgame’, and a recent 100-day countdown teaser put Doom’s throne front and center.

The film arrives on the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’, a box office showdown that has been dubbed “Dunesday”. With that kind of competition, having a villain this visible in lobbies around the world can only help.

The Osaka statue is likely just one of many displays that will appear before December. With theaters worldwide already getting their own version of Doom, expect more regional touches as the date approaches.
