New Look at Robert Pattinson’s Scytale in ‘Dune: Part Three’ Shows Why the Face Dancer Is So Unsettling
Every ‘Dune‘ film has introduced at least one villain who changes the temperature of the story. ‘Dune: Part Two’ gave audiences Austin Butler’s pale, hairless Feyd-Rautha, a transformation that dominated conversation for months. Now ‘Dune: Part Three’ is trying to do the same with a character who is built to be hard to read.
That character is Scytale, a Bene Tleilax Face Dancer played by Robert Pattinson. In Frank Herbert’s books, Face Dancers are genetically engineered shapeshifters who can copy a person’s appearance, voice and mannerisms, which makes them ideal tools for espionage and assassination. Scytale is a master manipulator at the heart of a conspiracy to overthrow Emperor Paul Atreides.
Now a new set of stills has put his look back in the spotlight. The images show Pattinson with pale skin, cropped bleached hair and no eyebrows, in several settings, including a sunlit desert shot where he wears a tan vest over dark clothing and gestures with a gloved hand. In close-ups, a slim, dark attachment curves from his cheek to his upper lip, giving the face a clinical, almost laboratory-made quality.

The unsettling design was a collaboration, and it did not start where Pattinson expected. In an exclusive interview with Empire, the actor said he had wanted Scytale to look visibly alien, but Denis Villeneuve’s early idea was for him to look like himself. Shortly before filming, the director emailed him a new concept, and Pattinson said the result felt like the character was “grown in a lab.”
The final look is blank and eerie rather than monstrous, with bleached hair and no eyebrows. It also fits the character’s purpose, since a Face Dancer’s menace depends on passing unnoticed. That tension between conspicuous and invisible is what makes the design so effective.
The first teaser in March gave audiences their initial glimpse of Scytale, and the reaction was immediate. Fans compared the transformation to Butler’s in the previous film, and online commenters were quick to joke about early awards chatter. Pattinson has said at a trailer event that Scytale is an unusual character, hard to read in terms of loyalty and not a conventional bad guy.
The footage has only deepened the mystery. In the July trailer, Scytale explains that the plot aims for regime change, and Florence Pugh’s Irulan replies that he has signed their death warrants. Another beat has Scytale saying he has found someone, followed by a shot of Chani testing the sand in the desert, which has led to a popular theory that he may be shifting into her form to goad Paul into a trap.
The final trailer adds more. Paul uses the Voice against Irulan to learn about Chani’s involvement in an assassination plot, and one report notes that the footage hints at a possible alliance between Chani and Scytale. As one breakdown put it, taking out a man who can see the future is not exactly easy.

Pattinson has had an unusually crowded schedule. He has appeared in ‘The Drama’ with his ‘Dune’ co-star Zendaya, ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Primetime’ this year, while also shooting ‘The Batman: Part II’. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is billed as his final role of the year.
His casting initially surprised some viewers, but the early reaction suggests the gamble is paying off. One analysis argued that his shapeshifting Face Dancer seems up to the task of carrying out a careful plan to remove Paul from the throne. That is a significant step for a performer known for taking unconventional roles.
‘Dune: Part Three’ adapts Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah’ and picks up nearly 2 decades after the previous film, with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul ruling an empire built on holy war. The cast also includes Zendaya, Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem. It opens in theaters and IMAX on December 18, the same day as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
With less than 2 months to go, Scytale remains one of the film’s biggest unknowns. Every new image adds to the sense that identity itself is a weapon in this story. Whether Pattinson’s villain becomes the next breakout is a question only the finale can answer.
