‘Crystal Lake’ Just Hit a Peacock Milestone That Even Jason Voorhees Fans Didn’t See Coming
For nearly 17 years, the Friday the 13th franchise sat dormant, and for a long stretch of that gap, fans weren’t sure Jason Voorhees would ever slash his way back onto a screen. Rights issues plagued the property for years, creating legal bottlenecks that stalled new projects.
The wait finally ended with ‘Crystal Lake,’ a prequel series that earned its series order back in October 2022 and then spent years working its way through development. Production wrapped in October 2025, and Peacock set the premiere for Thursday, October 15, timed neatly for Halloween season.
Now, the numbers are in, and they paint a picture few would have predicted for a franchise that spent so long on the sidelines. According to Variety, ‘Crystal Lake’ has generated 1.3 billion minutes watched over its first 11 days, making it the fourth highest scripted original series ever on Peacock.
That puts it in rarefied air on the streamer. Only ‘The Best Man: The Final Chapters,’ ‘All Her Fault,’ and the first season of ‘The Five Star Weekend’ sit ahead of it, which is a notable spot for a horror prequel built on a 46-year-old slasher brand.
The social media footprint was equally loud. The series earned 1.8 billion earned impressions in its first 24 hours and grew to more than 7.6 million video views over its first 11 days, according to figures from Sprout.
It also helps that the show is a different beast from the films that came before it. ‘Crystal Lake’ comes from A24 and Peacock, with ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ showrunner Brad Caleb Kane serving as creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer. The story goes back to the beginning, with Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, the mother of a young Jason, played by Callum Vinson.
Cardellini’s presence has clearly been part of the draw. Complex described her work as pitch-perfect and noted that she is a recent Emmy winner, giving the series a level of prestige that horror franchises rarely enjoy. The Variety post even features Cardellini in a moody diner shot, cigarette in hand, a far cry from the summer camp carnage fans might expect.
Critics showed up, too. Complex reported that when the review embargo lifted, ‘Crystal Lake’ became the highest-rated entry in the entire Friday the 13th franchise on Rotten Tomatoes, easily topping the 48 percent score of the original 1980 film. A later report from Comicbook.com put the series at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, still well ahead of every other franchise entry.
The release strategy may have helped the numbers as well. Peacock opted to premiere with all 8 episodes available at once, which is an ideal setup for a binge-hungry audience looking for something spooky in the weeks before Halloween.
There is also a bigger story here for Peacock. The streamer has long been chasing a breakout scripted hit, and ‘Crystal Lake’ lands as a franchise revival that delivers both buzz and viewership. For a service known more for sports and reality hits like ‘Love Island USA,’ a scripted horror play cracking its all-time top 4 is a meaningful win.
What happens next remains to be seen, as no official word on a second season has surfaced in the reporting so far. But if the early data is any indication, Jason’s story is far from over, and Pamela Voorhees may have just become the streamer’s most unlikely success story.
