Doctor Doom Stands Guard in an Osaka Cinema Lobby as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Marketing Reaches Japan
Marvel has never been shy about turning a big release into a spectacle, but the campaign for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is pushing that instinct further than most. Rather than leaning only on trailers and posters, the studio and its theater partners have been putting physical pieces of the film into the real world. Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom has become the face of nearly every tie-in.
Earlier teases focused on Steve Rogers, Thor, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, but Doom took center stage later and has since appeared on popcorn buckets, collectible figures and theater displays around the globe. Argentina has shown a Doom statue inside a lit glass case that glows green, and theaters in Brazil and Spain have revealed their own Doom collectibles. One display even showed a life-size Doom statue without his hood, the first time the villain had been seen that way in the marketing tour.
Now Japan has its own imposing tribute to the villain. A statue of Doctor Doom has made its debut in the lobby of 109 Cinemas Osaka Expo City, part of a special decoration event themed around the eve of ‘Doomsday’. New photos and video show the statue standing behind stanchion ropes next to a poster for the film.

The display shows Doom in full regalia, with his signature metal mask beneath a dark green hood and a chain draped across his armored chest. The armor is detailed with geometric patterning, and the statue stands on a base in the middle of the lobby. The cinema has made it open for anyone to see.
The theater also added a playful touch, asking visitors not to touch the statue so as not to anger him. At the same time, it encouraged people to take plenty of photos, which is exactly what a three-dimensional promotional piece like this is designed to inspire. For fans, it offers a chance to pose beside the villain in person.
The cinema’s announcement also served as a release-date reminder. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will open in Japan on December 18, the same day as its US release. Walt Disney Japan is handling distribution, and the film is retitled with Japanese lettering in the country.
That simultaneous release has been in the works for a while. Japanese outlets reported back in July 2025 that the film would open on the same day in both countries, a welcome change from the delays that major MCU releases once faced overseas. Earlier this year, limited-time lobby displays with large banners and standees also appeared in cinemas across the country.
The Osaka statue is part of a broader push. New faction posters have been displayed in Japan showing the various heroic and villainous groups in the film, and a separate Japanese poster drew attention for including the X-Men logo alongside the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and Wakandan characters. Marvel Japan has not commented on that poster, but it has fueled speculation about the role of the mutants.
The country has also been a stop for earlier Doomsday displays. At Osaka Comic-Con in 2025, a Road to the Avengers booth showed the film’s updated logo alongside banners for other Marvel releases. By comparison, the new statue is a much more immersive way to build excitement.

The focus on Doom is not accidental. Fans have been combing every image for clues, since the character remains very mysterious despite the trailers and teasers released so far. Viewers are looking for hidden cameos, possible deaths and details about his identity.
The comic-book-style throne imagery, the green lighting and the armored look also make Doom easy to turn into statues, buckets and figures. That is useful for a film with a huge ensemble, since a single dominant image can unify a global campaign. The Osaka lobby shows how that strategy plays out at the local level.
Expect more displays like this before December. With ‘Doomsday’ arriving on December 18 and China opening 2 days earlier, theaters around the world are likely to keep adding Doom to their lobbies. Whether the villain can stand up to the heroes onscreen is another matter.
