Josh Hutcherson Welcomes Peeta and Katniss Back to Panem After Jennifer Lawrence’s Emotional Return Comments

When ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2′ closed out the saga in 2015, it seemed like the story of Katniss and Peeta had come to a natural end. More than a decade later, the possibility of their return has become one of the most talked-about pieces of franchise news. The latest reaction comes from the actor who plays Peeta himself.

The return is tied to ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’, based on Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel. The prequel is set 24 years before the first film and follows the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, in which the number of tributes was doubled. Francis Lawrence is directing again, and the film arrives in theaters on November 20.

Hutcherson shared an Instagram story that reposted a quote from Jennifer Lawrence about returning to the franchise. He added a short caption saying they’re back, finished with a red heart emoji. The post is a brief but unmistakable acknowledgment that Katniss and Peeta are returning to Panem.

The quote he shared came from Lawrence’s recent appearance on Alex Cooper’s ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast, where she confirmed she is reprising Katniss. She described the experience of stepping back into the role as unbelievable and crazy. It was the same crew, including an assistant director she has worked with countless times, and the reunion with Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson left her emotional.

Lawrence also painted a vivid picture of how close the cast became again on set. She joked that she and Hutcherson were practically inseparable during the shoot, barely going anywhere without being side by side. She called the experience beautiful, which suggests the reunion carried real weight for the actors involved.

It is her first time playing Katniss since ‘Mockingjay – Part 2’, which means she is returning after 11 years. She had previously told Variety during the ‘No Hard Feelings’ press tour in 2023 that she was totally open to the idea if the right opportunity came along. That openness has now turned into reality.

Their involvement was first reported by The InSneider and later confirmed by trade outlets in December 2025. Both actors are expected to appear in a scene tied to the novel’s epilogue, which features Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch after the fall of the Capitol. That points to some kind of flash-forward, though the exact nature of the cameo has been kept under wraps.

Hutcherson had signaled interest well before that. In a Variety interview in November 2025, he said he would love to be back on set with Francis Lawrence, Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson. He added that it wouldn’t take any convincing at all.

The 5 films released so far have taken in more than $3.3 billion at the box office, and ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ is the sixth installment. With the original stars returning, even in small roles, the film becomes a bridge between the franchise’s past and its future. For longtime viewers, seeing Katniss and Peeta again will be a nostalgic moment.

Hutcherson’s short post suggests the feeling is mutual. The pair have stayed close off-screen, so it makes sense that they would treat their return with such affection. Whether the scene is brief or substantial, it is clearly meaningful to the people involved.
