Peter Safran Reportedly Sets Sky-High Bar for ‘Man of Tomorrow’

Few superhero sequels arrive with as much pressure as the one following a reboot that had to prove DC could still fly. ‘Superman’ answered that question loudly, becoming the first DC title to surpass $100 million in its opening weekend since ‘Wonder Woman’ in 2017. It also grossed roughly $352 million domestically after 8 weeks.

That kind of start hands the people in charge a mandate, and a long list of expectations to go with it. Now the spotlight has swung to what comes next. ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is set to open on July 9, 2027, after filming ran from April to August 2026, primarily at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, along with locations in the United Kingdom and Cincinnati.

Which brings us to the latest buzz. Cinema Carve, a verified movie news account on X, reports that DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran described ‘Man of Tomorrow’ as one of the greatest comic book movies ever made. The post adds that he pitched it as an event on the scale of ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ The exact setting of those remarks has not been made clear, so treat it as a report for now.

The comparison isn’t coming out of nowhere. Earlier this month, a purported script leak described two teams, Brainiac, four characters in space roles, and an event movie that has no Justice League. Rumors tied to that leak put the film’s scale in the neighborhood of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.

Another report framed it as a movie that stays mostly focused on Superman and Lex Luthor while different groups work toward the same goal. That description would make the sequel feel far larger than the first film. It also suggests the story could play like a crossover without leaning on the Justice League.

Of course, invoking ‘Infinity War’ is a loaded move. The Marvel saga it belongs to hit a historic peak when ‘Avengers: Endgame’ became the second highest-grossing movie of all time at nearly $2.8 billion. Fandango’s Erik Davis has noted that delivering something historic sets a bar fans expect every following project to at least approach.

It also matters who is reportedly doing the talking. Safran is the studio’s business-minded half, as Gunn handles the creative side while Safran handles the business side. A bold pitch from the exec who produces every DCU film reads as a confidence signal to fans and to Warner Bros. alike.

The timing adds another layer. Gunn and Safran’s DC contracts reportedly expire in April 2027, 3 months before the movie opens. That makes ‘Man of Tomorrow’ look like a possible capstone to their opening chapter.

The rollout hasn’t been smooth sailing lately, either. ‘Clayface’ reached U.S. theaters on October 23, 2026. Days later, Gunn replied to a fan on Threads on October 27 to say that the film stands alone, which drew fresh scrutiny of the shared-universe promise. SuperHeroHype has also argued that ‘Lanterns’ and ‘Man of Tomorrow’ have no room for error.

So the hype is arriving at a delicate moment for DC. If the film delivers anything close to what is being promised, the studio could land its biggest crowd-pleaser yet. If it falls short of ‘Infinity War’-level expectations, the comparison will be hard to shake. Either way, July 9, 2027 now looks like a major test for the new DCU.
