Tributes for Sir Patrick Stewart have poured in from every corner of the entertainment world since his death on October 28. Co-stars from ‘X-Men’ and ‘Star Trek’ have shared memories, studio executives have praised his craft, and fans have revisited his best-loved scenes. Yet one of the most closely watched responses has come from his own family.

Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 86, following what his family described as a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His family said he was surrounded by live music, prayer, tears and laughter in his final days. He is survived by his wife, singer Sunny Ozell, along with his son Daniel and daughter Sophie.

Now Patrick Stewart’s son has offered his own public reaction. Daniel Stewart, 59, posted a photo on X on Thursday showing himself carrying his late father on his back while the two performed together on stage. The image was shared without a caption, and it has since been pinned to the top of his feed.

The photo needed no explanation for those who saw it. Replies filled up quickly with condolences, with users expressing sympathy for Daniel and his family and describing his father as someone loved and admired by many. The simplicity of the post stood out in a week crowded with long statements and formal tributes.

It also carries extra weight because of what Stewart said before his death. In an interview with the Irish Independent in 2023, ahead of the release of his memoir ‘Making It So’, the actor said he had a practically non-existent relationship with his children. He explained that he had always put his acting work first and was obsessed with his career, leaving everything else in second place.

That 2023 conversation was strikingly candid. Stewart said he carried significant grief over the distance between himself and his children, who are both in their 50s, and he admitted he could have done better as a parent when they were young. He also said he was haunted by the sense that they had become who they were partly because of his influence, or his lack of it.

Those comments drew headlines at the time, and they resurfaced this week as news of his death spread. Stewart had spoken about the issue before, telling The Guardian that his relationship with his children was a work in progress. The earlier remarks suggest he had been reflecting on the topic for years.

Despite the distance Stewart described, father and son have a long shared history on screen and on stage. Daniel appeared in the ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ episode ‘The Inner Light’, playing the son of Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He also appeared alongside his father in the 1993 TV film ‘Death Train’ and in 5 episodes of the series ‘Blunt Talk’, where he played the estranged son of Stewart’s character.

Daniel is an actor himself, with a career that began in 1986, and he has performed extensively in Shakespeare. Stewart once said he was horrified when his son decided to follow him into acting, while Daniel has said he wanted to be recognized for his own talents rather than his famous surname. In 2012, he also reflected that his father’s absence during his early years, caused by an acting career, pushed him to be a better father to his own children.

Stewart was married to his first wife, Sheila Falconer, from 1966 to 1990, and the couple welcomed Daniel in 1967 and Sophie in 1972. Daniel and his wife reportedly have 2 children, as does his sister. So far, Daniel hasn’t made any further public statement, and the photograph remains his only response.

For many readers, that restraint feels appropriate. Family relationships rarely fit neatly into a headline, and a single image of father and son laughing on stage says more than a paragraph could. As tributes continue to arrive, it offers a quieter reminder that behind the famous roles, Patrick Stewart was also a father.
