Few movies have as strange a legacy as ‘Jumper’. It was a big-budget sci-fi launch with a hot director, a rising cast and a plan for multiple sequels, yet it never got past the first installment. Now Hayden Christensen is once again talking about a ‘Jumper’ sequel, and fans have been quick to take notice.

The film arrived in 2008 with real momentum behind it. Doug Liman, fresh off hits like ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ and the ‘Bourne’ series, directed a story about teleporters hunted by a secret group called the Paladins. Christensen played David Rice, a young man who discovers he can jump anywhere in an instant.

During a panel at L.A. Comic Con, Christensen was asked which non-‘Star Wars’ character he would revisit at his current age. According to The Nerd Wire, he picked David Rice, and the audience cheered loudly enough to surprise the moderator. He explained that the team believed more films were coming back then, but that for various reasons it didn’t happen.

His follow-up was more cautious than the headlines suggest. Christensen said, “Don’t hold your breath, but it’s possible maybe one day,” according to The Nerd Wire. That is an expression of interest rather than an announcement, and no studio has confirmed any plans.

The sequel talk is not new. ‘Jumper’ was designed with a larger saga in mind, and producer Lucas Foster has said the story was built to unfold across 3 movies. Liman has also shared ideas for later chapters, including jumpers reaching other planets and traveling through time.

Those plans stalled because the first film did not become the runaway hit the studio wanted. It earned about $225 million worldwide on an $85 million budget, but it fell short of that budget domestically. Reviews were rough, and critics pointed to a thin story and unexplained rules about who the Paladins are and why only some people can jump.

Despite the reception, the movie has built a loyal following over the years. Syfy has noted that it opened at No. 1 and was a huge hit in South Korea, even if it never earned the sequel it set up. More recently, it landed on Netflix, giving a new audience a chance to rediscover it.

The cast also helps keep interest alive. Samuel L. Jackson played the relentless Paladin hunter, with Jamie Bell, Rachel Bilson and Diane Lane in supporting roles. Fans on forums and in opinion pieces regularly argue that the world deserved another shot with a tighter script.

This is not the first time Christensen has fueled hopes. In 2010, he told MTV that a sequel was being discussed and hoped it would go somewhere darker. He suggested the story could become a case of a mother hunting her son and possibly a sister hunting her brother.

Nothing came of those comments, though the franchise did continue in other forms. ‘Impulse’, a YouTube series produced with Liman involved, adapted a later novel by Steven Gould and followed a different direction entirely. Another ‘Jumper’ television project with Bell attached was also reported to be in development at one point.

For now, there is no official sequel, reboot or development news attached to the property. Christensen’s remarks are enthusiastic but noncommittal, and his own warning makes clear that nothing is imminent. Any new film would also need the rights holders, a director and a studio willing to revisit a title with a mixed record.

Still, the timing is interesting. Christensen has enjoyed a major resurgence thanks to his return as Anakin Skywalker, and his name carries more weight with fans than it did when ‘Jumper’ first arrived. That kind of goodwill is exactly what a dormant franchise needs to get a second look.

Legacy sequels have become a regular feature of Hollywood, and a few have thrived by embracing the passage of time. An older David Rice, facing the same hunters and a larger conflict, could be a natural way in. It would also let the story address the questions the first film never answered about the Paladins.

Whether anyone at a studio is listening is an open question. Until then, the best fans can do is keep making noise, which they clearly are.

Would you like to see Hayden Christensen return as David Rice in a Jumper sequel?
