Seoul’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Marvel Drone Show Turns Thor Into Steve Rogers Wielding Mjölnir
One of the most satisfying beats in ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ marketing has been the idea of Steve Rogers lifting Thor’s hammer. Fans have been talking about it since the trailer, and now it’s been recreated in the night sky above South Korea. The Marvel drone show in Seoul has produced one of the most striking images of the campaign so far.
The performance was already a headline event before any individual moment went viral. With thousands of drones moving in sync, the show gave Marvel a chance to condense decades of franchise history into a few minutes of light. It also offered a rare spectacle that fans could share from anywhere.
In a clip that has been spreading online, the drones form a glowing image of Thor with his hammer raised over one shoulder, his red cape streaming behind him and his hair and beard picked out in white and blue lights. The formation then shifts into Steve Rogers wielding Mjölnir, a transition that mirrors one of the biggest reveals from the film’s footage. The 1:14 video captures the shapes against the Han River skyline, with the city’s lights twinkling below.

The sequence is more than a flashy visual trick. In the trailer, Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers is shown reuniting with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and proving that he’s still worthy of lifting the enchanted weapon. Seeing that moment recreated in drone form gives fans a chance to relive the scene on a monumental scale.

Seoul staged the performance on Halloween night at Ttukseom Hangang Park as the city’s final Han River drone show of the year. It used 2,000 drones, the largest number ever deployed for the series, and ran for 15 minutes starting at 8:30 p.m. The Seoul Metropolitan Government said the formations were synchronized with music, and sound was provided through a partnership with HARMAN International and JBL Professional.

The lineup featured characters including Iron Man, Thor and Doctor Strange, according to Korean reports. One of the most talked-about sequences saw a giant Thanos transform into Iron Man and then into Doctor Doom, tracing Robert Downey Jr.’s path from Tony Stark to the villain. The Thor and Steve Rogers transition added another emotional beat to that history.

The hammer has long been a symbol of worthiness in the MCU. In ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, the Avengers tried and failed to lift it, and in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Steve Rogers surprised everyone by wielding it in battle against Thanos. The new trailer plays on that history, with Thor and Steve reuniting as the team prepares to face Doom.
The footage also pokes fun at the growing number of Captain Americas. Hypebeast notes that the trailer acknowledges Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson and U.S. Agent as shield bearers, with Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man questioning how many there are. It’s a self-aware joke that gives the film a lighter tone amid the apocalyptic stakes.
Evans’ comeback has been one of the film’s biggest talking points. He hasn’t played Steve Rogers in an MCU film since ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in 2019, when the character passed the shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Evans had previously said he was happily retired from the franchise, so his return surprised many fans.
The first teaser, released in December 2025, ended with text announcing that Steve Rogers would return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. It showed him riding a motorcycle up to a farmhouse, and a later scene showed him holding a baby. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have said they couldn’t picture another Avengers story without his character.
The drone show was part of a broader celebration in South Korea. Disney Korea announced a series of events that included Marvel Run Korea in Gangwon and a photo zone at the park inspired by Doom’s throne. The country is also an important market for the franchise, with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ drawing 13.97 million admissions there.
The film opens in Korea on December 16, two days before its release in North America on December 18. That earlier date means Korean fans will be among the first to see it. The drone show is one of several ways Marvel is building excitement ahead of that launch.
Drone shows have become a popular tool for large-scale promotion because they combine spectacle with shareability. Each performance creates short, vivid clips that can spread quickly across social media. They also allow studios to reference specific moments from a film without showing actual footage.
Seoul’s Han River series has become a major draw in its own right. City officials said about 197,000 spectators attended seven performances through October 9, with attendance averaging roughly 28,000 per show. A Marvel-themed edition fit naturally into that format.

Reaction online has been enthusiastic, with viewers praising the detail in the formations and the emotional impact of the Thor to Steve transition. Many noted that it captured the same feeling as the trailer moment, while others joked that the drones looked more heroic than most of the cast. The clip has drawn hundreds of thousands of views.
For now, it’s another reminder of how much of the film’s story is tied to nostalgia. The image of Steve Rogers holding Mjölnir has become a symbol of the franchise’s past and its future. And with the release only weeks away, moments like this are likely to keep building the hype.
Which iconic MCU moment would you most like to see recreated in a giant Marvel drone show?
