Sarah Michelle Gellar has never needed much help standing out on Halloween. The actress built her career on characters people love to dress up as, from a certain vampire slayer to one of the most famous schemers in teen movie history. So when she chose her own costume this year, fans were bound to pay attention.

Gellar’s name is permanently tied to the holiday in pop culture. In a past interview with Den of Geek, she reflected on how rare it is to have so many characters that people recreate every October, including Buffy Summers, Kathryn Merteuil and her ‘Wolf Pack’ role Kristin Ramsey. Halloween costumes, in other words, are practically part of her legacy.

This year, though, she skipped her own filmography and picked something sleeker and faster. The Sarah Michelle Gellar Halloween costume is a Ferrari racing driver look, and a pair of photos from the night show her fully committing to the red-hot theme. She smiles in both shots and strikes a playful pose with a hand raised to the brim of her cap.

The outfit is built around Ferrari’s signature red. Gellar wears a red Ferrari cap with the prancing horse logo, along with a fitted red racing-style dress with white striped trim on the cuffs and a pleated mini skirt. The design carries several racing details, including a blue F1 patch on the chest, a checkered flag patch on the sleeve and a Ferrari shield on the hip.

She finishes the look with black ankle boots, which add a modern edge to the classic racing palette. The backdrop is a plain white curtain, which keeps all the attention on the bright red. It reads as a playful, fashion-forward spin on a driver’s race suit rather than a literal replica.

Gellar is far from alone in reaching for racing gear this year. Costume guides have been pushing F1 looks as a go-to option, with one fashion site calling the red driver outfit an easy last-minute idea that takes under 10 minutes to assemble. Retailers have also stocked Ferrari-style costumes, including sets with a red racing jacket covered in motorsport patches, a pleated striped mini skirt and a matching racing cap.

The timing also makes sense for the sport. Ferrari red is one of the most recognizable palettes in motorsport, and fan guides have highlighted Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari red as a costume a lot of people want to wear this year. That popularity has helped turn the driver’s look into a Halloween staple, from simple DIY versions to full replica suits.

Gellar’s costume also fits into a long tradition of Halloween appearances. Her most famous role, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, ran from 1997 and made her one of television’s best-known horror icons. She also starred as Kathryn Merteuil in ‘Cruel Intentions’ and later led the Paramount+ series ‘Wolf Pack’, which premiered on January 26, 2023.

Her career has stretched across other roles as well, including ‘Ringer’, ‘The Crazy Ones’ and the film ‘Do Revenge’, which Den of Geek described as an iconic comeback and a kind of spiritual sequel to her teen-movie past. With that range, Gellar has plenty of options for costumes drawn from her own work. Choosing a Ferrari driver instead shows a lighter, more playful side.

For anyone hunting for last-minute costume ideas, the racing driver look offers a flexible template. Red is the key color, and accessories like a team cap, patches and boots do much of the work. The look can be dressed up as a mini dress or kept closer to a classic jumpsuit, depending on how literal a fan wants to be.

It also shows how a simple concept can work with the right styling. Gellar’s version leans on strong color, a few well-placed patches and confident posing. In a season when many costumes try to be elaborate, a clean, bold look can stand out just as much.
