Zendaya’s Playful Ultimatum to Tom Holland Over ‘The Odyssey’ Is Back in the Spotlight
When Christopher Nolan calls, most actors don’t hesitate. Tom Holland, however, had a real scheduling problem, because he was already committed to another franchise that needed him at the exact same time. A resurfaced clip of his explanation has fans revisiting Zendaya’s playful ultimatum to Tom Holland, which turned a stressful career decision into one of the year’s funniest behind-the-scenes stories.
Holland was offered the role of Telemachus, the son of Matt Damon’s Odysseus and Anne Hathaway’s Penelope, in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic. The offer arrived while ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ was gearing up for production. Both films needed their star, and the dates were not flexible.
Holland shared the story during a sit-down with Damon, Hathaway and Nolan for People magazine. He recalled telling Zendaya about the offer after he got home from meeting Nolan, and she immediately guessed who was behind it. When he said it was “the big one,” she asked if it was Chris, and he confirmed it was Chris Nolan.
Then came the complication. Holland explained that ‘Spider-Man’ was scheduled to start the very same day they would begin shooting Nolan’s film. Holland told People that Zendaya’s response was, “I’ll leave you if you don’t do ‘The Odyssey.'”
Tom Holland says Zendaya threatened to leave him if he chose Christopher Nolan’s movie over Spider-Man “To be honest, when I got home after our meeting, I sat down with Z and was like, ‘I’ve been offered this movie.’” “And she was like, ‘By who?’ And I was like, ‘It’s the big one.’ And she was like, ‘Chris?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s Chris Nolan.’” “Spider-Man was literally scheduled to go the same day that we would start shooting, and Z said, ‘I’ll leave you if you don’t do the other one.’” https://t.co/REvBEZmhSn

By all accounts, the moment was a joke, and it landed. Damon, Hathaway and Nolan all laughed, and Nolan quipped that he owed her a thank-you. Holland added that he was there as a result, which only made the room laugh harder.
The anecdote also reveals how seriously the couple takes Nolan’s work. Holland has called the offer “the phone call of a lifetime” and compared it to getting the call about ‘Spider-Man’ a decade earlier. He has also called the script the best he has ever read.
The joke was funnier than the logistics. To make ‘The Odyssey’ work, Holland had to ask Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman to push back production on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ He described the conversation to GQ as “uncomfortable.”
Holland has since thanked Rothman for making the change possible, saying he couldn’t have joined Nolan’s project without the studio’s support. The delay also opened the door for Destin Daniel Cretton to come aboard as director of the Marvel film. In the end, both movies landed in theaters about 2 weeks apart.
Zendaya’s involvement with ‘The Odyssey’ didn’t end with the ultimatum. She ended up in the film as Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, who appears alongside Damon’s Odysseus throughout the story. Holland told Access Hollywood that Nolan gave him the chance to be the one to tell her she was wanted for the part.
Holland also advised her to read the Athena material closely. That means the couple ended up sharing the screen in 2 of the year’s biggest releases, which is a rare feat for any pair of actors. Holland appeared to confirm in a June Esquire interview that they are married.

The scheduling gamble paid off for everyone involved. ‘The Odyssey’ became a major hit, opening to $124.5 million domestically and eventually becoming Universal’s highest-grossing release. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ followed with a long run of its own, spending 6 straight weekends at No. 1 before being dethroned.
Nolan has said the shoot was hard, but hard in the right way, and that the cast rose to it magnificently. He has also called the group a family. Given how the cast has talked about the experience, it’s easy to imagine that Zendaya’s joke is just one of many stories from set that haven’t been told yet.

Part of the charm is that it’s relatable, even at this level of Hollywood. Even the world’s biggest stars sometimes need a partner to push them toward a bold decision. And in this case, the push helped create one of the most talked-about casting runs of the year.
As Oscar season heats up for ‘The Odyssey,’ Holland is being campaigned for Best Supporting Actor, which gives the anecdote an even more fun twist. If he does land a nomination, Zendaya may have more to be proud of than just a funny line.
Do you think Zendaya was right to encourage Tom Holland to accept a role in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey?
