Elle Fanning Recreates Elizabeth Banks’ Viral Book Reaction for ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’

Effie Trinket has always been one of the most colorful figures in ‘The Hunger Games‘, a flamboyant Capitol escort who is generally kind but oblivious to her role in perpetuating the Capitol’s horrors. Elizabeth Banks played her in the first 4 films, and few supporting performances in the franchise left a bigger mark.

So when Lionsgate announced that Elle Fanning would play a younger Effie in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’, the pressure to honor Banks’ take was obvious. The announcement came on May 20, and Fanning had long been one of the most popular fan picks for the part.

Fanning has handled that pressure with plenty of humor, and her latest tribute may be the cleverest yet. She recreated Banks’ “The Six Stages of Reading ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’,” a viral bit in which Banks reacts to the book with a string of exaggerated expressions.

In Banks’ version, she holds a copy of ‘Mockingjay’ and cycles through emotions labeled excitement, fear, shock, relief and sorrow. Fanning swaps in a copy of ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ and mirrors each expression against a vivid, colorful backdrop.

The side-by-side layout opens with the same caption, “This is going to be the best book ever!”, before each panel is labeled with a stage. Fanning appears in full Effie styling, complete with a fascinator, which makes the homage feel like a character piece as much as a joke.

It is also the kind of nostalgia play that works especially well for a prequel. Fans get a wink at the old films while the new film builds its own identity.

The tribute lands because Banks has been openly generous about her successor. Fanning has said Banks sent her flowers with the franchise’s famous well-wish after her casting, and that the two have been in touch.

Banks has also praised the choice in interviews, calling Fanning a perfect fit and saying she is excited for a new generation to have its own Effie. She has even left the door open to returning herself, telling Brit + Co, “I would, if the fans want to,” when asked about a possible ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ epilogue.

That openness has helped shape the conversation around the new film. Rather than a rivalry between old and new, the franchise has leaned into a passing of the baton.

Fanning has credited fans for helping her win the part, saying the studio had been getting hounded online by people demanding she play Effie. She has described Effie as her favorite character and has praised the layers Banks brought to her, even beyond what appears in the books.

According to Deadline, the casting confirmation described Effie as the stylist for Haymitch Abernathy in the lead-up to the 50th Hunger Games. Joseph Zada plays Haymitch, and the cast also includes Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Maya Hawke and Kelvin Harrison Jr.

Fanning has since wrapped her work on the film. She has said she loved seeing Effie on screen and that she bows down to what Banks did with the role.

Fanning has carried the character into the promotional rollout as well. At the London fan screening on Oct. 28, she wore a pink Robert Wun couture look with a pillbox-style fascinator topped with a tiny ballerina.

The film is set 24 years before the events of the original ‘The Hunger Games’ and begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. It arrives on the heels of 5 films that have grossed more than $3.3 billion worldwide.

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ opens in theaters and IMAX on Nov. 20. With Effie, Haymitch and a young Snow all on the way, this latest tribute suggests the film is as aware of its legacy as its fans are.
