Few questions have followed the DC Universe around quite like the one about order. With films, streaming series and animated projects all sharing one continuity, fans have spent years trying to work out where everything fits.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have been shaping the DCU since taking over as co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022. Their first slate, ‘Chapter One: Gods and Monsters’, mixes live-action and animation, which has only made the chronology feel more tangled.

Now a fan has taken a swing at untangling it, and Gunn has weighed in. A DCU fan posted a full chronological timeline and tagged him, asking for his verdict, and the DC Studios co-head responded with a reply that suggests the list is close to the mark.

The timeline runs from 2016 to 2027 and places each project in the order its story takes place, not the order it was released. It opens with the first 5 episodes of ‘Lanterns’ in 2016, followed by ‘Clayface’ in 2021 and ‘The Suicide Squad’ in around May 2022.

From there it lists ‘Peacemaker’ season 1 in October 2022, ‘Blue Beetle’ in 2023 and ‘Creature Commandos’ season 1 in 2024. ‘Superman’ lands in May 2025, followed by ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 in June 2025, ‘Supergirl’ in 2026, the final 3 episodes of ‘Lanterns’ in 2026 and ‘Man of Tomorrow’ in 2027.

Two projects are marked to be determined: ‘Creature Commandos’ season 2 and ‘People vs. Gorilla Grodd’. One detail stands out, because the fan splits ‘Lanterns’ across 2 eras.

Gunn replied roughly an hour later on Threads, saying timelines give him anxiety but that he thinks the list is pretty good. He flagged no mistakes and offered no corrections, which leaves the fan’s order standing.

It is a short reply, but it is the closest thing yet to an endorsed roadmap. DC Studios has not released an official DCU timeline, so until it does, this fan-made version carries Gunn’s informal seal of approval.

The response also fits Gunn’s habit of answering fans directly. He has often used Threads to clear up questions about canon and placement.

Gunn has been clear for a while that the DCU timeline is not a puzzle box. When a fan asked last year whether DC would create a timeline like the one for the MCU, he said that, as of that moment, the order was basically as the movies and shows come out.

He has also placed individual projects. Gunn said ‘Supergirl’ takes place between ‘Superman’ and ‘Man of Tomorrow’, and he has said that ‘Creature Commandos’ season 2 won’t be long after ‘Man of Tomorrow’ arrives.

That second detail matters, because it means 2 ‘Superman’ movies will arrive between the 2 seasons of the animated series. It also helps explain why fans keep asking where the animated characters fit.

Gunn has also confirmed that the characters and events of ‘Creature Commandos’ connect directly to later DCU projects, so skipping the animated series means missing key setup.

The real-world release schedule gives fans a rough guide. ‘Creature Commandos’ season 1 premiered on Dec. 5, 2024, ‘Superman’ opened on July 11, 2025, and ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 arrived on Aug. 21, 2025.

Looking ahead, ‘Supergirl’ was dated for June 26, 2026, ‘Lanterns’ for August 2026 and ‘Clayface’ for Oct. 23, 2026. ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is dated for July 9, 2027, with David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult among its stars.

As the schedule fills out, the gap between release order and story order is likely to matter more. A neat fan-made list is one way to keep track of it.

For viewers, the fan’s list answers a question that has lingered since the DCU launched. It shows how projects like ‘Clayface’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’ can fit into a shared world without being rebooted.

It also gives newcomers a simple viewing guide. Until DC Studios offers an official version, the fan’s timeline, with Gunn’s approval, is as good a map as any.

Do you agree with the fan-made DCU timeline that James Gunn called "pretty good"?
