Netflix just dropped the first trailer for the second and final season of The Sandman, and it’s going to be released in two parts, Vol. 1 arrives on July 3, and Vol. 2 follows on July 24. Fans can also expect a bonus episode on July 31. But this will be the end of the road for the dark fantasy series.

Back in November 2022, Netflix gave the green light for a second season, but in January 2025 it was announced that this would also be the last. According to The Sandman showrunner Allan Heinberg, they always planned it that way. “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,”

Heinberg explained. He also added, “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation.”

Season 2 will bring back Tom Sturridge as Dream and add some new cast members. In May 2024, it was announced that Adrian Lester, Esmé Creed-Miles, and Barry Sloane would join as Destiny, Delirium, and Destruction. Later, in July, even more actors were confirmed, including Ruairi O’Connor, Freddie Fox, Clive Russell, Ann Skelly, Jack Gleeson, and Steve Coogan, playing characters like Loki, Odin, Thor, Puck, and more.

Filming kicked off in June 2023 at Shepperton Studios but was put on hold in July because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Neil Gaiman confirmed on social media that production resumed by the end of November, and it officially wrapped in August 2024.

Gaiman, who created The Sandman comic and helped develop the Netflix series, is also at the center of serious controversy. In early 2025, multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, starting with a podcast by Tortoise Media and followed by a New York Magazine article.

Gaiman responded in a blog post, denying everything. “I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever,” he wrote. “The messages I exchanged with the women… read now as they did then — of two people enjoying entirely consensual sexual relationships.”

Since those accusations, some projects based on Gaiman’s work have been affected. Dark Horse Comics has stopped publishing adaptations of his books, and Disney has paused work on its movie version of The Graveyard Book.

Still, The Sandman Season 1 was a hit when it premiered in August 2022. It got good reviews, stayed in Netflix’s top 10 globally for seven weeks, and did well in the U.S. streaming charts. Now, with the trailer for Season 2 out, fans have just a little longer to wait before returning to the Dreaming one last time.
