Major PS5 Exclusive Reportedly Delayed After Another Installment in the Series Was Silently Canceled
PlayStation fans eagerly awaiting the next God of War title may need to wait longer than expected. According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, a new game in the God of War series, reportedly set in ancient Greece, has been pushed back to 2026.
Grubb shared this update on the Last of the Nintendogs podcast, stating, “I have Marathon and the unannounced new God of War Greek project, which I heard was pushed into 2026, as well.”
This upcoming game is rumored to be a spin-off rather than a continuation of the main series. Unlike the recent God of War titles, which focused on Norse mythology and a cinematic 3D experience, this project is said to adopt a 2.5D Metroidvania style.
The story is expected to explore Kratos’s early life before he ascended to godhood, potentially featuring his brother, Deimos, as a key character. Earlier speculation suggested an Egyptian setting, but Grubb’s comments align with insider Tom Henderson’s claim that the game will return to Greece.
Sony has yet to confirm the project’s existence, leaving fans reliant on rumors for now. The delay, while disappointing, is not uncommon in game development, where timelines often shift. Fans hoping for a reveal at the recent PlayStation State of Play were left empty-handed, but there’s talk of a possible announcement at a PlayStation Showcase this fall or at The Game Awards, where God of War Ragnarok’s DLC was unveiled previously.
The God of War series has been a cornerstone for PlayStation. The 2018 reboot, centered on Kratos and his son Atreus, earned widespread acclaim for its emotional storytelling and won multiple awards. Its 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarok, concluded that arc and was equally well-received. With the Norse storyline wrapped up, this spin-off could bridge the gap until a new mainline game emerges. Meanwhile, fans can revisit God of War 3 Remastered on the PlayStation Store or through a PS Plus Premium subscription.
The delay follows Sony’s cancellation of a live-service God of War project earlier this year, though details on that remain scarce. While the 2026 timeline suggests a wait, the project appears to be moving forward, offering hope for a fresh take on Kratos’s journey.
A God of War spin-off in a 2.5D Metroidvania style sounds like an exciting change for the series, especially with a return to Kratos’s Greek roots. The delay is a letdown, but I’d rather see a polished game than a rushed one.
Exploring Kratos’s past with Deimos could add depth to his character, and I’m curious how the new format will feel. What do you think about this shift to a spin-off? Are you excited for a Greek setting or hoping for something else? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
