New ‘God of War’ Prequel Reportedly To Be Revealed as 2D Metroidvania Game

A new God of War game is reportedly set to be announced tomorrow, and it’s going to be quite different from what fans might expect. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the upcoming title will be a 2D Metroidvania-style game, serving as a prequel to Kratos’ adventures in Greece.

While Santa Monica Studio, known for developing the mainline God of War series, is overseeing the project, they are not the primary developer this time.

Richtman shared this information on his Patreon, stating that the game will feature a side-scrolling perspective with 3D models, similar to the style seen in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. This approach marks a significant departure from the traditional third-person action gameplay that the series is known for.

The decision to explore a Metroidvania format could offer a fresh take on Kratos’ early years, providing fans with new insights into his character and the events that shaped him before the original God of War game.

This shift in gameplay style also opens up possibilities for innovative level design and storytelling techniques that differ from the main series.
