Switch 2 Outsells Xbox Series and PS5 Pro Combined in Japan in Record Time
Nintendo’s Switch 2 is off to a massive start in Japan, breaking records and leaving other consoles far behind. In just two weeks, the new system has already sold over one million units. According to Famitsu, that’s more than any console has ever sold in Japan this quickly, even more than the legendary PlayStation 2.
The first week alone saw nearly 950,000 Switch 2 units sold. By the second week, another 153,000 were added, bringing the total to over 1.1 million. That kind of launch has already pushed the Switch 2 ahead of some consoles that have been on shelves for years.
One major milestone: it’s already outsold the total lifetime sales of every Xbox Series console in Japan. That includes the Series X, Series S, and Series X Digital Edition. All together, Microsoft has sold around 679,000 Xbox Series systems in Japan. The Switch 2 topped that in just 14 days.
It’s also already passed Sony’s PS5 Pro in the region. That system, which is still relatively new, has only sold about 221,000 units in Japan so far. While the original PS5 continues to sell steadily, it only moved around 9,600 units during the same week that the Switch 2 sold over 153,000.
Older Switch models, like the original, OLED, and Lite versions, are still available and selling in smaller numbers. But right now, they’re far behind the Switch 2, which is clearly where the market’s attention is focused.
The Japanese market has never really embraced Xbox consoles, so it’s not a surprise to see Microsoft lagging. But even with that in mind, the speed of Switch 2’s success is eye-catching. The PS5 still holds a strong lead overall in Japan, with more than 5.7 million units sold, but the Switch 2’s hot start could make things interesting.
Famitsu’s sales data shows just how powerful Nintendo’s pull is in Japan. The Switch 2 has captured attention fast, and it may only be getting started.
From my point of view, this launch is a clear reminder that Nintendo still knows exactly how to connect with its home market. Breaking records this fast isn’t just impressive—it’s rare. If Nintendo can keep up this momentum, we could see the Switch 2 dominate Japan in the months ahead. What do you think—can the Switch 2 keep this pace? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!
